My brother wants me to buy him a Subaru WRX here in the US so he can take it to Mexico. Has anyone done this before? Is it a complicated process? Would I still have to pay taxes on the car when I buy it here? Would I need to register the car? He's looking to drive it down once I buy it.

Several years ago, I had understanding of the process. I do not know if it is still the same.

At that time, in order Nationalize an automobile in Mexico from the US, rules at the time would not allow a a NEW auto to be imported and Nationalized.
Also, at the time, no automobile older than five years or less than two years old were allowed to be Nationalized.

Their reasoning was that they had enough OLD automobiles in Mexico, and they did not want new automobiles imported since they sold new ones there.

New autos in Mexico, at the time, were heavily taxed. I had a friend who did this and his new auto ended up costing twice the amount of the same car in the US.

You probably should speak to the Mexican Consulate in order to clarify their present laws.

Call the Mexican Consulate (There is one in Chicago and one in Washington). They will be able to answer your questions and probably send you the needed forms
