Christ's whole life was a self-denying, self-displeasing life. This is from a commentary on Romans 15:1-7 and I know it but in trying to be more like him, it always helps me to remember WWJD and it is always a struggle for us humans when it comes to our weakest point. I like to keep stories and ideas in my head. I know of course he gave up his life, but I mean smaller stories

His ministry was as you described it. Perhaps his pre-ministry life – including childhood – was not one of complete self-denial and asceticism. Not much is known of the childhood of the historical Jesus.

If Christ's life was so displeasing WHY is he remembered and loved by so many and sought out by so many more? Christ had a realistic view of what the world was then and is now, "It hated him" before it hated anyone else. He managed to do the most incredible things up to and including forgiving his murderers, he was a selfless man not displeased with life at all, quite the contrary, he begged God to find another way he wanted to live! HE DID!

I don't have the chapter or verse, but it's where Satan was tempting Him. That whole passage was self-denying.

But you don't have to be self-denying, you just have to believe in Him and trust in Him, the whole thing about giving up the joys of life to be a Christian is somewhat of an extremist idea. Jesus was self-denying in the sense that He wouldn't sin, He didn't sin. We sin. It is human nature to do so. What we should do to be "self-denying" is avoid the bad things in life. Avoid drinking, drugs, slander, gossip, and things that are harmful to ourselves and/or others. That is a start.

I don't mean to be rude, but I don't think he had a "self-displeasing life." He lived a life satisfying the prophecy of the Messiah, he was not tempted, he did not ,sin, but that doesn't mean he was displeased with his life. He followed God's word, but I believe his life was filled with joy to a great extent. According to trinitarian beliefs, Jesus and God are one therefore, to be pleasing to God must be pleasing to himself.

Christ was a giving loving self-less person. I don't think his life was "displeasing". I believe he loved his life. I really don't know what you mean by displeasing.

Would it make sense to have a self-denying life if there was no afterlife? It seems to me, it's worth investigating to a great degree to determine whether the afterlife is real or not, before giving your entire earthly life to the ideal.

it is not self -denying...

christian life is a different kind of life that it is shown in the society...actually the society has been strongly criticied along centuries by ..writers..

God wanted to say that we musn't live selfish..if we don't help the other and don't honour the other we go to hell..

the life that God made means to help the other the one who needs help in the conditions of a life in which satan is involved. If there was no satan around..nobody would need your help..everyone would be rich , glorious and happy...

God let the help to be within our powers.it is within our powers to help the other , or it is within our powers to make the other smile , feel happy and safe.and not cheated.

well some are happy that they have expensive clothes jews and fragrancies and cars and vilas while walking among their poor brothers..who could be happy having expensive clothes while the other has no cloth at all?i e.g since i became an adult ..i am no longer happy wearing golden jews while i see beggers in the streets ..the jews give me no hapiness at all..
saint john baptiser said that the one who has two clothes should give one of them to the one who needs it....to these the qotation that you gave , reffferes to..and other ..e.g..accepting to be jailed for Jesus in order that the people reach God..as saints martyrs did..

well i have 3 pair of long boots...one is with short heel..i need them, and two pairs are having higher heels ..i have to give one of these pair of boots to a woman who has no boots and i know a woman who need my boots..and i have to give them to her..even if they are from Paris...otherwise God won't let me enter Heaven..even if i will walk without shoes there.while if i will give her the boots...i guess god will give me a pair of sandals with precious stones..in heaven...well i don't say i deserve them...
