This probably seems like the opposite direction to be taking an antenna - down instead of up. I live in a rural area and am having trouble getting signal. Don't want to pay for service & don't want tacky antenna on side of house. Right now I am using an antenna that sits on top of the entertainment center. I would like to not have to see the antenna. Would also take suggestions on the best and most powerful indoor antenna.

The main problem with indoor antennas is that they are usually too small to provide enough gain (signal strength) for a good picture and are ONLY recommended if you are in a very high signal strength area.(eg ,under the tv station tower)

Another problem is that of signal reflections.
Building structures often contain metal and these cause ghosting images.

The best idea is to get an antenna up onto the roof , away from all metal parts and use a good sized antenna.

Next best choice is one installed in the roof space.
This can work quite well assuming that you don't have a sheet metal roof and your house is not in a dip.

Under the floor would have to be one of the worst options.
You may have water pipes and electrical wires that may contribute to ghosting and with such a low hight above ground level it would only be practical if you lived on top of a hill.

A simple rule is . ¨line of sight¨.

From your antenna you should be able to see the transmission tower.

If you can't, expect reception problems.

You are right...down rather than up is not the way to go. Put the antenna in the attic. There are several smaller amplified ants. that can just be laid on the rafters and "aimed" for best reception. I even know of at least one friend that has his mounted on a rotor.

The reception under the house would be lousy. I would get one for a pole right outside the room where the TV is( unless that is on the front of the house of course). The reception would be much better. Plus, it's easier to get at for maintenance.
