I have honestly never known a nice Dalmatian, but there must be some out there. It is not a breed I would recommend for children; as others have said, they are active. They can also be rather independent and standoffish. With a baby in the house, you want a dog that is a big moosh and can handle anything. That said, if you really do your research you can probably find a Dal somewhere that is good with kids. That may be like looking for a needle in a haystack, though.
And thank you for spelling "dalmatians" correctly!!!!

Actually, my family had a Dalmatian when I was a baby (well, not a baby... a toddler.) I have to say, he was a good dog, but he wasn't great around kids.
Like others have said, dalmatians need a LOT of exercise. At least an hour of it every day. New parents often have trouble juggling a new baby as well as work and other commitments; an hour of exercise might be too much for your time and energy levels.
Secondly, Dalmatians can be really unpredictable. They can go from lying calmly on the rug to charging around the yard in a matter of seconds. They also don't seem to know their own strength sometimes, and their "playing" ends up being a bit rough. As a kid, I would ride my Fisher-Price tricycle around the backyard, and my Dalmatian would try to play with me and end up knocking me off my tricycle. Mind you this was when I was four or five years old, not even a baby.
I second the previous answer about getting a beagle. Beagles are great dogs - you will almost never find an aggressive beagle. They are very good with kids. They have great personalities and are very playful, but aren't as big and strong as Dalmatians, and they tend to be more sensitive to the size of a child and are likely to be more gentle with your baby. Just remember that they still need exercise - not as much as a Dalmatian, but half an hour of walking every day would be great.

Dalmatians are a pretty high-maintenance breed and they're prone to a number of health problems. If you're gonna get a dalmatian, make sure to find the best DAMN breeder possible. Deafness is a pretty common health issue as well as urinary problems. They're nice dogs but pretty high-maintenance. They aren't particularly dumb dogs, but many have hearing problems and a lot of people mistake that for stupidity because it can make them a bit harder to train. And from what I've seen, aggressive dalmatians are often the result of being cooped up and not getting enough attention. Again, high-energy breed and needs plenty of attention. For your situation, a dalmatian wouldn't be too bad but other breeds would be much better. You'd need to be able to give plenty of attention to the dalmatian without neglecting your other dogs. They can be a good dog for you, but just do what you'd do with any dog and take everything into consideration.

What Laura said: When I was a kid, I used to play with the dalmatian at the firehouse all the time. But there was always a grown-up nearby.
I don't know about babies, now. And babies really shouldn't be left alone with any critter because they have so little control over their own movements.

I grew up around dalmations all my life even when I was baby. My family used to breed them. They are not bad dogs. Alot of the aggression in any dog is the environment. If get puppy it will be just fine with your dogs and people. I had one named derby. She was the best. She loved to lay on you and play. Going for walks was her favorite! They are great dogs. Having a dalmations i got alot of comments. Such as people saying she would attack them and some of my friends wouldn't even come over. Dalmations smile alot as well. It makes people think they are growling when they are not. I think some people have just gave them a bad reputation. Whateve you decide I'm sure will be good for you but don't let others affect what you want because they have herd stories. Good luck!

I would not recommend a dalmatian for two reasons:
1- As a breed, they are kind of flaky and a little unpredictable.
2- They are extremely hyper active and require A LOT of attention, and activity. As a new mother, you will probably need to devote most of your time to your newborn. This will cause problems for you and the dog.

From the experience's I have had , I would have to say no. they are a little wild/ hyper, they can be nice one minute and snippy the next. They have a tendency to go deaf and some are born deaf, making them even more unpredictable. They usually don't do well with kids.
Under no circumstance should you ever leave any breed of dog alone around a baby.

Dalmations are beautiful dogs. But they are very hyper and also are on the list of top ten most aggressive dogs. Had a Dalmation for around 10 years. Was ok with me but had to watch her around kids and when she ate also had to always have her on a letch at all times.I would thing a Beagle would be a great choice for small children. We now have a Beagle and there is no comparision to our Dalmation. Beagles are very loyal and loving.

I would wait till your Baby is older then get a Dog. Your child will require all your attention. And the dog will crave it to. Is this really fair on a dog?
