The occult isn't an art. The phrase 'art of the occult' is intended to encompass a set of belief systems involving practices recognizing a non-physical reality.

The occult is often referred to as the dark arts or magic. Basically, this differentiates it from science. It is not based on anything scientific. It originated during an age of ignorance. The practitioners were able to convince others of their, so called powers, through trickery.

Today it is finding a resurgence among young and disaffected people. It is a way to appear to be special without really having to accomplish anything special. Most people eventually tire of the nonsense and move on to the next "spirituality du jour".

It only means "the art of the hidden."

Occult means hidden. If you mean a specific art labeled occult, that's different.

To an occultist- one who researches hidden knowledge relating to magick and who may or may not practice magick itself

The occult arts refers to magick manifested not through trickery, but through either various spirits, or through the abilities of the occultist's own mind (such as psychic abilities, etc) . Occultists see the practice of magick itself as an art. Depending on the type of path followed, this may or may not also refer to the path leading to the Great Work, or the unification of the occultist's soul with the Divine, or All.

When I was an occultist, I found it usually meant buying as many occult books as humanly possible and spending time alone in a darkened room. I've since found better ways to spend my time...
