I think speaking Welsh in North Wales is more essential than South. It's the people of North Wales more than any who have been petitioning to make Welsh a recognised language in the EU and a lot of people in North Wales speak Welsh as their first language. It would definitely be a requirement and they would probably offer it as part of the basic training.

I don't think it is mandatory 25.6% of the population now speak welsh so it would be a bonus if you did but every one also speaks english

Welsh is an Indo-European language, so is presumably descended like most (but not all) languages in modern Western Europe from something first spoken on the steppes of central Asia. Its immediate decent is from the Brythonic language or languages of Roman Britain. Conventionally one speaks of Early Welsh as being the development of that Brythonic precursor around the time when Britain fell to the Scandinavians, and Old Welsh as being the language of Wales between the ninth and eleventh centuries. Manuscripts of the laws of Hywel Dda and of early poetry date from this period; some of the earliest Welsh documents are of poems (and a famous nursery-rhyme) from the culture of the Hen Ogledd, the `Old North' (of what is now England and southern Scotland). Cymraeg Canol, Mediaeval Welsh, covers the period from the twelfth to the fourteenth centuries. Most extant manuscripts of the Mabinogi and such are from this period, although the stories are older.

As a Welshman, I think that this test is to find out if you have any knowledge of the Welsh language at all. North wales people use the Welsh language quite a lot, but they are all english speaking as Well. Good luck with your career. Nos Dda. ( Good night) pronounced as North Star. to the English speakers.

In many parts of North Wales, Welsh is the native language. It would be reasonable to expect a public servant to have some knowledge of the language in a Welsh speaking area.

In all probability the older Welsh community would very much appreciate it! As a school boy I spent time in welsh wales as it was referred and really enjoyed it. My mother having a life long welsh girl who lived with her family before she met, married my Father. She was lovely and full of happiness and laughter, always made me welcome with lots of hugs and kisses. She spoke Welsh fluently and converesed in english for all the older welsh community - many of which only spoke welsh!

Whereas I dont think welsh has been allowed to pass into history - I'm not sure to what extent their schools still encourage it - or if its still tought.

Certainly, it would be of immesurable worth in some parts of Wales and in particular to the North.

Yes,I think a sound knowledge of Welsh would be a good idea. Even more important is an extensive knowledge of 'speed cameras' as the Chief Constable is known in some motoring circles as'The Traffic Taliban' because of his fixation with 'speed cameras',having said that his record with regard to actual crime solving is pretty poor.

As less than 10% of people born in Wales have any knowledge of the language, I see no reason why you should, given that it's not necessary to know, say, Hindi if you're going to join the force in S.London.
