Get all dressed up for the ceremony, then inform the guests (in advance = invitation) that the reception will be casual with a pig roast picnic. A friend of mine had a picnic in her backyard for her reception, and everyone had a blast with volleyball and bocce ball.
It's your wedding. Have a blast!
Suggested food: the pig (more than one depending on how many guests you have), potato salad, macaroni salad, pasta salad, jello salad, chips, rigatoni, halushki and halupki (if you are polish), and chicken fingers for the kids. Buy a keg, some cases of soda cans (which can be recycled for $$), and bottled water. Those little huggies or Capri Suns would be good for the kids, too.
Kids activities: sidewalk chalk, coloring area, or a clown.

My coworker had a pork roast for her wedding last month.
Her fiance and her had a heated discussion about having the pig whole or chaffing dishes, indoors or outdoors. He is very country and she is more refined; she had to compromise and agree to have the whole pig indoors.
Honestly, I didn't mind it at all, the food was delicious and with an open bar and a good DJ, the pig was the least in my mind.
Good luck

Sounds fantastic fun. My cousin had a hog roast for her son's christening - it was a huge success. What country are you in? Have you already booked a supplier for the roast? If you're in the UK, the British Army have amazing outdoor catering capabilities and do hog roasts at a very competitive price.

Clare, be sure to plan enough time to get the hog cooked before the wedding. In my family, we have a tradition that we get together on the 4th of July, have a Hawaiian-style in-ground hog roast that cooks over night, then, shortly before serving, we have my uncle marry any of us who are going to get married that year. It's all picnic, except the wedding clothing. Then we do fireworks as soon as it gets dark. We all love doing this as a family tradition and all the close family memories.

Have been to a wedding with a hog roast, great fun, great talking point too. Think there are cmpanies that can set this up for you.If its fine you can eat outside, ask around if any of guests have gazebos you can borrow, just in case of bad weather

We had a full carvery menu when we got married, and a hog roast was one of the options there. Sometimes I do wish we had gone for it!
Get a big marqee and some braziers if it's chilly, and the biggest pig you can find! It will be brilliant.
But trust me, you wont care on the day anyway :D

here in the philippines is common during weddings to serve hog roast or what we call lechon. you can use a village hall even if you serve it. the roast could be prepared ahead of time and served hot during the reception.

My step uncle had a hog roast at his wedding, it was and think still is quite unique. Plus it's YOUR wedding and YOUR special day, so go with what you feel is right. Good luck!
