Throw him in the litter box hold him there till he relaxes and relizes and you should be done.
NEver had a problem most cats prefer it you let him know where it is. DO not walk him away from the litter box let him leave it himself.

You didn't say how young this little kitty is, but if he's really small, try getting one of those storage boxes that's about 12 x 18 inches in size and about 3 to 4 inches deep. Most kittens are too little to get into a regulation litter box. You might also start out with Cat-Attract scooping litter. Do NOT use any type of scented litter with a kitten--their sense of smell is too acute for this and may drive him away from the litter box. Now, every couple of hours, take him to the litter box and allow him to smell around and scratch around in in, and it doesn't take long before a kitty gets the idea that THIS is where they are suppose to go. Just make sure you keep the box clean, and keep on taking kitty to the box every couple of hours, and this shouldn't take more than a few days and he'll have the idea.
As a final note--and this is somewhat gross, but it's the truth. If you also have the mother cat or a dog in your home--then, NO you're not seeing any evidence of the kitten having a bowel movement anywhere on the floor because either the mother cat is cleaning it up or your dog is eating it. Dogs LOVE cat poo, and will keep the litter box totally cleaned out if they have access to it. Yes, it's gross, but cat poo seems to be the best "treat" in the world to a dog--go figure!

How young? Younger than 4 weeks? If so, look for websites about raising baby kittens, as you may need to "help him" go to the bathroom (see answer above mine)
Between 4 and 8 weeks: If you think it's not going to the bathroom enough, talk to a vet.
LItter training: To encourage good litter-training habits, it's best to leave kittens this age confined to one or two rooms, so they're never far from the box. Like a recently-potty-trained 2 year old, they can't always "Hold it" long enough to go way far away (for a kiten that tiny, going from one end of the house to the other is a long way)
Make sure the litter box has low sides or a nice dip so it's not too hard for kitten to get in and out of.
After it eats, put it in the box and scratch the sand with its paw. It will get the picture rather quickly.
After 10 weeks of age or so, it should be able to have the run of the house.
Good luck!!

No problem. Get a scoopable liter because it works more like their natural habitat and PLEASE make sure it odor free. Cats have 2 sets of nostrils and can smell so well that even the slightest perfumed substance can irritate them. The perfumed kind can also cause alergies to them as well. Keep the litter cleaned twice a day also due to that plus, cats don't like dirty things so they won't go in a dirty litter box and then you WILL have problems. Because it is a kitten, it needs a few boxes around the house. Just like a baby being potty trained, they cannot make it to the bathroom all the time on time, especially if the box is on one floor and they are on another. Put kitty in the box after every time they eat and every time they wake up from a nap even if they just jump back out. That will encourage them to go there regardless if they use it or not. That is all you need to do. I've raised hundreds of kittens in my cattery and never had an accident.

You say he's quite young so I'm wondering just HOW young is he? Are you sure he's old enough to be away from mom? When kittens are really young, mom licks them in the private area to help them use the bathroom. It stimulates it for them, so if he was taken away from mom too early, you may have to stimulate it by using a warm wet cloth on his privates. Just gently rub them like you're simulating a mothers licking. I know it sounds gross and weird, but it needs to be done if he's too young. I had a friend who had a kitten that was too young and she didn't know this (I didn't either at the time) and his little belly swoll to about the size of a baseball.
If that's not it, he may be going in places you haven't found yet! LOL.
As for getting him to use the litter box, just put it somewhere he can easily find it, show him where it is and usually they pretty much know what to do from there. I'm not sure how that works, but that's what I've done with all my cats and it's worked. So just put it where he can find it, show him where it is by putting him in the box and letting him crawl out on his own and follow you out and usually he can find his way back.
If you still have problems, maybe you should take him on to the vet.
Edit -- and as for the "Hasn't had much human contact so he's very timid" part, just keep playing with him and cuddling him and give him as much human contact as you can. If you let it go too much while he's still young, he'll end up with a very stand offish attitude toward humans.

Lock him in the bathroom or other small room with litter box, food and water (maybe a toy or two). They are pretty well inherently programed to use a box. In a small room he wont have to look far. Once he knows what the box is, you can move it to where you want and show him where it is. He will remember. While in the small room just visit with him. Play with him with some toys. Be patient. At a young age they come around fast. Probably within 2-3 days. Good luck.

If he is old enough to be away from his mother, than he should already be litter trained. I would make sure the box is low enough for him to get into, and probably put it close to his food and water dishes. Monitor when he eats, because shortly after he should need to go potty.... if he is younger than 6-8 weeks he might need some help, stimulation might be a good idea!
