There is nothing wrong with option number one. The thing that is wrong is for a person to discount the Bible as "ancient mythology".
The Bible teaches that on our own we have no way of knowing God or understanding spritual truths. It's like an ant trying to understand a human being or trying to figure out what purpose the space shuttle serves.
If you want to exercise option 1 then I would invite you with an open mind to consider the writings of A W Pink on what he believes are the evidences that the Bible is a book of divine origin.

Bible

I'm not saying that you should surrender your reason or believe just because the author believes. I'm just suggesting that if you really want to know the truth and be a "Free Thinker" then you have the responsibility of considering the rational arguements of people who claim to have conducted similar investigations.
Then you might want to check out the investigations of Simon Greenleaf.

Testimony of the Evangelists by Simon Greenleaf (1783-1853)
Greenleaf, one of the principle founders of the Harvard Law School, originally set out to disprove the biblical testimony concerning the resurrection of Jesus Christ. He was certain that a careful examination of the internal witness of the Gospels would dispel all the myths at the heart of Christianity. But this legal scholar came to the conclusion that the witnesses were reliable, and that the resurrection did in fact happen.

We need more people like you in this world! The bottom line is that it is easier not to think than it is to be an original authentic thinker. Millions find comfort in following the school of fish because the current is already there....just jump in and you don't have to do anything....the flow moves you right along. It's much more difficult to go against the flow and just rationally think.

Well, having faith in my beliefs does not exclude me from being a free thinker.
But surely you must agree that most of the knowledge or so-called knowledge has little if any effect one way or the other.
I watched the special on the History channel about the big bang theory and it was every interesting, but quite useless information really.

There is nothing wrong with #1 as far as I can tell.
However, religious people will make up some silly thing to justify the need to believe in a deity and blindly follow whatever the priest says.

Nothing, no. 1 is the best, logical option if your intentions are to explore life and live it peacefully without institutionalism beliefs.

There's nothing wrong with exploration of the mind......
But it wont save you from sin.....only Christ can do that.
Free thinking is dangerous sometimes......because it makes you focus on "self" rather than the Lord
