Yes, GM foods have to go through a lot more safety trials than normal foods so they're probably safer. GM foods also tend not to require much in the way of pesticides (and most of the farmers who grow them have really cut back on their use of pesticides).

Studies on the health impact of genetically modified foods have found no evidence of increased danger in the real world.

The most dangerous foods out there are probably the so called 'organic' foods because a lot of the things that they are allowed to use have never been properly tested for toxicity and many of the pesticides that they use on 'organic' farms are known to be vastly more toxic than what is typically used in conventional farming (but which for some reason can't be used on 'organic' farms). It is ironic that the most dangerous foods are the ones that the opponents of genetic engineering tend to prefer.

There is not really much data available about the beneficial effects of organic foods on our health. The major concerns are milk and meat from animals that were given hormones to increase weight gain faster, which made them ready for the market faster, which cost the producer less for feed to get them to that weight. people have been eating hormone enhanced meats for decades, there has yet to be a correlation between hormones, and increased death rates at a younger age, so that flag is still just flying at ground level. If you're not a glutton, and can afford pure food because you think you will live longer and healthier, buy it. If you have economic compromise, relax. 99% of us have a genetically programmed lifespan anyway. Plus if you smoke, chew and/or drink excessively, all the pure foods you put in your body will not prevent you from dying from the sequela of those two poisons.

The food itself has to be approved by the FDA to be sold...

but there's no proof on how they(or things in them) may interact with other things, chemicals and stuff, in our systems or in the environment around us. Some things may be safe by themselves, but put them together and they create carcinogens or other bad things.
