Peanut butter is an item high in calories. I use peanut butter chips as training treats with no ill-effects. Too much can make dogs really hyper though so be careful and make sure if it's regular gooey peanut butter that the dog has plenty of water to wash it down.

My Labrador will take any medication in the form of a pill EASILY when I stick the pill into a half a teaspoon of peanut butter. He licks it and the pills right off. Believe me, after struggling to shove pills down my cat's throat, it is a dream come true he loves peanut butter.
You might want to encourage a love for peanut butter for this very reason.

As with any dog, cat or person a dog could be allergic to peanut butter or chicken or beef etc but I do give my dogs peanut butter in their Kong toys. I also use it to give pills to my MinPins and when I had a GSD pup who was undershot the breeder advised me to smear it on her top teeth on the backside for her to push her teeth out for a normal bite. It didn't work, which didn't surprise me..lol.

Some of the answers crack me up... Like 'There are healthier treats specifically for dogs' .. Someone doesn't know jack about reading labels to make such a claim. For the most part dog treats made for dogs are chemical filled crap with god knows what in them and red dye #40. I would suggest to never give a treat 'made for dogs' unless it's all natural.
We give our dogs liver, cheese cubes, cut up hot dogs for treats. (Not that hot dogs are healthy) LOL But at least I KNOW what is in them unlike the crap in a cheap dog treat.
Peanut butter is fine here and there but I would not give him a whole lot.
When we have to medicate our dogs I always fold the pill in a half slice of bread with peanut butter on it.
As for the person who said the dog could choke from peanut butter on the roof of his mouth.. That's ridiculous. Dogs are not fragile like that.

Peanut butter is harmless. It's a good tool when you need to distract your puppy (Say you want to go out, you leave him in a crate, and he doesn't want you to leave--give a Kong with peanut butter in it). However, I would not give it to him several times a day in large quantities. Treats are better for training, especially like small treats, but sure, it's fine to give it to him, no harm done.

Mine love it and it has protein and oils that are good for the coat. I give my dog peanut butter as a treat on occasion. Never hurt any of them.

i have just bought a clicker training set for my border colie puppy who is 13 weeks old, and in the instructions it says that you should put peanut butter on the target stick so that they want to get to the target, so i dont think a SMALL amount would hurt if this booklet says that.

as one of the other answers suggest, peanut butter is one of the named treats you can give in a kong toy, so yes its fine, and in a collie he'll probably work of all the energy from it too. good choice.
