I am sitting in my car. This guy drives up and lectures me about sitting in the fire lane without identifying himself. I am thinking, what a jerk, doesn't he have better things to do. He drives off, and I see some sort of fireman tag on his car.

Anyone can pull up next to you and talk to you about anything. We call it freedom of speech.

It's illegal, even though it's a private parking lot. If a cop happens to drive by and see it, and is in the mood, she can get ticketed. About a year ago I was getting cash out of an ATM machine in the evening. While I was doing so a guy drove into the lot and parked right in front of the machines - which is marked as a fire lane - instead of pulling into a parking spot. Not a minute later a sheriffs car driving past stopped and wrote him a $471 ticket even though he was back in his car before the sheriff even stopped rolling up. Richard

I'm sorry, but every year there are accidents caused by motorists who get in the way of fire trucks responding to a call. Whether they don't pull over, park infront of fire hall garage doors, or idle away in a fire lane. If you were trapped in a building that was on fire, and were waiting to be freed by firefighters, and they couldn't respond 5 minutes faster because some schmuck was blocking the fire lane, it would matter! Any firefighter has the right to point that out, chief or not! For you to get indignant when you are the one in the wrong is idiotic and petty.

Nope - anyone can lecture you for sitting in the fire lane. You should not have been sitting in the fire lane. Next time, park the car in a legal parking space.

First of all, parking in a fire lane is a violation of traffic laws.
Which would you rather have, a firefighter or chief lecturing you about it, or a law enforcement officer writing you a ticket for it, then you get your lecture from the judge.
Think about it, learn from it, get on with your life.

as a friend of a fire chief... no he doesn't. anyone can tell you to find a legal parking spot... it's freedom of speach.
you shouldn't be breaking the law. it's illegal to park in a fire lane.
he could have taken down your tag # and had a police officer ticket you.
next time find your lazy self a parking spot and park properly.

I'm think a fire chief wouldn't have to identify himself. Sounds like this guy was probably a firemen himself and was irritated you were in his lane.

No, any citizen with some common sense could see that you're doing something wrong. And maybe he was a regular firefighter with cojones who decided you needed to know you were parked illegally and why.

so rather than him going "HOW DARE YOU FOR COMING IN THIS LANE" you would rather like it "HI. My name is Bill. Fire chief here. HOW DARE YOU FOR COMING IN THIS LANE!" What difference does it make.
