They are the thin blue line that stands between the honest citizen and the criminal element.
I would call that a deterrent.

My opinion? Well I think first that all police officers should know just what their oath they take is all about, Second that they all should know the difference between Legal and Lawful, Most police officers break the law and their oath every day, so they are no longer fit to hold that office, they must uphold the laws of the land, and stop forcing 'Statute laws' if they are to do their job correctly, as all so called traffic violations are only statutes which come from 'Act's'. So how can they do their jobs when they don't know what they are doing?.

Players in the game. Along with lawyers and judges. Sure, odds are there's some decent ones out there, but I've only come across the scum (to word it politely). When my children needed them most they refused to do anything. And now we pay the price. Can't say they're much of a deterrent to the criminals given the repeat offender statistics. Maybe if they were human and actually gave a **** about people...

A Police Officer is a human being who does a job most people would run from. Their life is at risk the moment they put on the uniform because of the nit wits hell bent just to kill any cop they see. How many here passing judgement face that daily?
Who here would answer a man with a gun call? Who here could deal with a crime of brutal violence, then go home & have supper calmly with their family? Who here could deal with horrific traffic accidents, suicides that are horrendous sights?
Most of you casting stones would be on the side lines puking. Sure, there are some guys who could stand a career change. How many of you here feel that same way about a jerk in your workplace?
You should stop and put things into perspective & realize all the non support you show your Police, only makes more bolder the very crazy sob who would kill you for your last two dollars.
If you think you were mistreated, there is a chain of command that officer answers to. Use it. If the cop is a bad cop, the good cops would love to see him go just as much as you would, as that bad cop hurts them too.
Just my two cents.

I think they do a great job under extenuating circumstances. They have lost control over young people mainly because the system has let them down.
Too many do-gooders with a finger in the criminal justice system that stops criminals from being prosecuted and given a true sentence that relates to the crime.
They still deserve respect and I have to admit that when I see a traffic car I check to see what speed I am doing, but then don't we all.

Police are very good for the honest public. They have what it takes to daily put on the uniform and stand up to the crazies and the damn fools who do not realize that the law is not to protect society form them. The law is to protect them from people like me. The police are the oil that smooth the gears of society and keep it reasonably polite.
Example: My wife worked at the hospital ER until the hospital (400 bed facility) closed recently due to financial loses because of Illegal Immigrants. The law said the ER had to treat them no matter that they did not even try to pay. The hospital has lost 81 million dollars over the last 10 years. What I would do is sell the deadbeats to the medical labs for use in place of experimental animals. This recovers the losses and stops the cruel use of animals in medical experimentation.
Thus the law prevents me from doing what seems like an elegant solution. It protects the people who think that mostly the police are there to interfere in their lives. They need to thank God every day for those men and women who put a target on their chest and stand between me and those who are really discourteous (the person who turns left out of the right hand lane across 3 lanes of oncoming traffic), deadbeats (those who do not pay their just bills or stiff their children), perverts (John Couey and his ilk), and people who are just plain mean.
I do not hate those people; I just think they should be killed out of hand as a sanitation measure. That is the kind of world we would live in with out police. The next time you see one thank him or her for the courage and service they have displayed on your behalf!

I work against the police as opponents every day, and I must say that they do a really good job under very difficult circumstances. The main reasons why people like to have a goat them has nothing to do with thepolice, it is to do with the way the police force is run, with meaningless targets, and the Home Office taking away their discretion.

The police have lost all respect in my eyes. The persecute normal hard working people going about their business and seem to run scared from the criminals. Their whole attitude and the way they try to talk down to you. They DONT know best but you have to agree with them or be fined.
As for these plastic coppers, they are something else. Little wet behind the ears drips straight out of school with a hat on. Very frightening. I'm surprised a few haven't been killed yet from what I've seen of their behaviour.
The police have a very very long job ahead in rebuilding their reputation and trust in my books. They are now a farce, not coming out to robberies and break in's etc. Everyone you talk to now has a story.
I think they (police) should go back to doing what they used to do 30 years ago, it worked then and they had respect.

Overall I think the police do a good job, however their focus seems to be on ensuring the offenders who commit property crimes and murder get locked up. Other crimes such as sexual offences against children often get lighter sentences, just does not make sense

As a paramedic I work with the police everyday. Overall I think they are good, honest people trying to make a difference. Unfortunately, it's the few "bad apples" that ruin it for an entire department.
