had ringing in both ears. I could hardly hear my own voice. A few hours later this improved, but I don't hear the same as I did, with the same sensitivity as before. Did I cause permanent damage to my hearing?

Go to the hospital you may have damaged; if not perforated your ear drum. Don't worry though it grows back so you won't have any permanent hearing loss but then again you shouldn't have been firing a gun that close to your head especially without ear protection.

Go the the hospital they'll tell you no need to worry though it just needs to be checked out thats all.

sounds like you ruptured your ear drum.
You may not have caused permanent hearing loss, but the damage to the ear-drum will show on examination.
I had ruptured mine years ago then when I had a sinus infection and they looked in my ears they said" looks like you have ruptured your eardrum, at one time" I think it forms scar tissue.
PS I have to hearing loss!
The only way to be sure is go to your dr. and have it checked out.
