I do not equate a cognitive crutch to a monetary based society or social acceptance. Having friends is quite different from not trying to comprehend death. Having or not having money is quite different from not educating oneself about the universe.
People love to be loved. It's not so much a crutch, but more of a need. The cognitive crutch of religion is a deliberate act of forced ignorance, which is the byproduct of a need rather than a need itself. That originating need is knowledge of our creation and of our death.
The most popular type of dream is of themselves flying. What does that mean? It means that people are always wishing that they are more than the sum of their parts. Religion is merely an extension of that desire.

I personally don't see God as a crutch but as a true friend. The only thing I see as a crutch are the things of this world. Everything belongs to God, even us. And when we give up things we are actually rendering back to God the things of God and what we have used as a crutch to make it through the years.
Take care and may God bless you spiritually.

GOD is more than a crutch, HE is LIFE.
HE never intended for us to know death.
Man was made in the image of GOD, HE wants to be loved and honored, and the human race wants the same thing.
It is sad that many look for what they want, by what they see.
When it is GOD who created us, and only HE knows how we will be HAPPY.
The things of this world are a crutch that many hold on to, and they let go of the love of GOD. HE is who we NEED to hold onto.

you pose a really interesting question..
yes i do believe god is just a crutch for those who cannot help themself...
but money is different..its a pass to get around in the world and with out you have nothing
i think once you have something such as money and you're content without which most people arent because of greed, you can virtually free yourself of crutches..
we dont just exist..we need to things to make our existance last so we can exist

Yes, we need our lives to have worth. This need is like a wound that causes us to limp. Anything that gets us a feeling of worth can be called a crutch.
But if we believe that God exists, then we see our need for worth is really a need to be joined with our Creator. So instead of seeing ourselves as wounded and needing a crutch, we see ourselves as incomplete.

You have crutch confused with clutch. Jesus gets us in gear towards his heavenly Kingdom and doing what really matters in this world.

Correct. To accept human invulnerability and invincibility is an absurd. We are a weak sinful race and you dont have to be a theist to recognize that fact.
