Just as the person above me said, Delta is petitioning the government to be able to operate a flight out of Atlanta to China. As far as Air China, they are part of the Star Alliance which United Airlines is a member carrier of. China Airlines which is headquartered in Taipei, Taiwan has some code-share agreement with Delta. Korean Airlines is part of the SkyTeam Alliance so your friend would probably fly Delta into Seoul, Korea and connect on Korean Airlines into China.

Delta does not fly to China, yet. They have petitioned the government to allow them to fly there out of Atlanta. Doing some research, it looks like the only city he could fly into on the delta network is Guangzhou. That would be on China Southern Airlines out of Los Angeles, California.
