People who go to some sort of military college or academy that are commissioned into the military as officers instead of enlisting in low ranks, what are the positions they can be in right away?

If you go through any military acamdemy ( USN, USAF USAA) you will be commissioned as an O-1 ( Ensign in the navy or 2nd lieutenant in all the others). The only way to be comissioned as a higher rank is to be direct commissioned and work as a doctor/ lawyer/dentist etc. I think you can get as high as O-4 (Major or Lieutenant commander).

Majority of people I have known started off as being a Platoon Leader. One guy had a staff possition... but as a jr officer, it's good to have some PL time first.
