I only buy free range eggs.I hate the idea of the poor chickens being caged.

In my childhood, since we kept chickens in our yard, including a couple of cockerels, very often the eggs were fertilized.
The majority of the eggs we eat today come from battery farms where the chickens are kept indoors all the time and do not get to meet a cockerel - or boss of the yard. So, the eggs the battery hens lay are never fertile [unfertilized].
The yellow of an egg, the yolk, is where the baby chicken would normally appear and grow. It is virtually one mass of protien. The egg white is mainly of water which sustains the growning chick while still in the egg.

Normally, they are unfertilized. Don't count on it, though.
The clear egg white - it goes white when hardboiled - is protein food for the baby chick. The egg yellow is called the yolk, and it's fat food for the baby chick.
If the egg is fertilized, there may be a little solid speck where the yolk and the white meet.

I think that hens have to be in a cage 67 square inches Is cruel as hell. Chickens produce just as good free ranging as in that teensy cage. In europe, they are banning the use of cages. I think they should do that in the USA as well. Otherwise its just plain cruel.

yes they are unfertilised as chicken farms do not have any cockrels
