I've always considered dreaming to work kind of like a kaleidoscope - take a bunch of junk from you ray, put in a seemingly simple gadget (sleep?) and voila, you get either a masterpiece or some random.. thing. My argument is the fact that in I can find a meaning why everything happens in my dream – for example if I dreamt about swings, I remember that once during the day I thought about swings, if I dreamt about a girl with a fringe, I remember seeing a picture of someone having the exact hairstyle. This way, I can I know the source of everything that happens in my dreams.

But could you prove to me or give some arguments as to why dreams might also have meanings? I'm really looking forward to it and half wish to be convinced :).

Thank you!

You just not remembering enough of your dreams. I understand what you are saying, that if you thought of something during the day that it might come up in the dream again.... but why? Why would you think of the swing for so long? There must be a reason for it. Perhaps y ou had a "feeling" of remembering pleasure from an earlier time in your life, perhaps you are remoreseful that you are not ten, or it could symbolize the freedom you felt when you were swinging. Just an example. Dreams definitely help you work out problems in your waking life, express wishful thinking, sometimes they point out things that you refuse to deal with during waking hours. Maybe you just don't remember enough of your dreams to understand this aspect of dreaming. Maybe you do not want to. If you should want to, try and keep a journal and take baby steps with it..... try writing down anything that you can remember about your dream, keep pondering...... in example, if you were on a swing, what was around the swing.... a play ground? Buildings? Open space? a Single tree? was it a place you recognize like a school yard or grandmas house? Then try thinking, were you happy, sad? free? having fun? Aware? Oblivious, absentmindedly swinging? etc. etc., etc., you will find a lot of key factors hidden in there. Good Luck.

But this democratic consensus isn't what people are interested in when they ask if dreams are meaningful. So what do we mean when we ask if something has meaning or not? Generally the answer depends on the context of the situation. In the context of science when we ask if dreams are meaningful, it often means whether or not they function to help us thrive and survive in some way. Different sciences will approach meaning differently as each operates under a different story/context. A psychologist may want to know how the dream works to show a person a better way to live and experience life, while an anthropologist may be more interested in how the dream impacts the way people in a tribe alter or confirm the way they live and interact with one another. A brain scientist may be more interested in how dreaming and sleeping contribute to the restoration of our health or consolidation of our memories and experience. Artists and writers are more interested in the inspirational aspects of dreaming and how they can carry the images, novelties and creative dreaming process over into their own waking processes and creations. Spiritual and tribal people are often aware of a different meaning of a dream, the dream as a message. The message may be from an ancestor, a spirit or god, or even from one's own soul or unconscious. The same dream may have different meanings to all of these people. Which one is correct, or are they all incorrect in looking for meaning in a dream that has no meaning? Many people in the Dream Movement, a loose coalition of individuals and groups that study and work with dreams, formed the Association for the Study of Dreams (ASD) in 1984 as a "non-profit, international, multidisciplinary organization dedicated to the pure and applied investigation of dreams and dreaming." 1 The purpose of the organization was many-fold, "to promote an awareness and appreciation of dreams in both professional and public arenas; to encourage research into the nature, function, and significance of dreaming; to advance the application of the study of dreams; and to provide a forum for the eclectic and interdisciplinary exchange of ideas and information." 1 The overall consensus was that dreams have many levels and layers of meaning, but that the final decision about just what these meanings would be had to be left up to the individual. That is, the individual was to be the final authority on the meaning and value of his or her own life, and this included one's dreams. 2

Interesting! I don't look at it in terms of kaleidoscopes... but rather mirrors.....

One reflects, and the other interprets and that interpretation of the reflection is at odds with the perspective.

It's like looking in a mirror, knowing it is your reflection, but if you had to read the words reflected in the mirror, it might take some getting used to. Certainly, it is the same word, but the way it appears is not the same. Most would not know what it says without considering that this is a mirrored reflection.

Noitcelfer - doesn't look like reflection - does it? - One has to know how to look at it..... Or it will just look strange -) (("I had this strange dream".. etc.))

That is the language of the dream......

the language speaks what the soul has done all day. it interprets based on experience all things done whether past or present. there are "keys" to know what period of time it takes place and there are ways to break it up so that you know the perspective being spoken.

the reason we dream is for revelation sake. we all have a beacon inside of us that tells what we are doing, individually, with our allotted time while here. This beacon allows us to enter that place (luke 17:21) and tell our point of view from many perspectives. But, every day is a page. And as the days change so too does the story of our lives.

the story can be found written in Revelation when it is brought up for review: ((revelation 20:12)) the books are individual man....

I think they have meaning and that's why I answer ones that I can help with. They are more than random thoughts but they may seem that way. Your mind is working on problems. They may be present problems or past problems. Subjects such as death is a big problem because our minds really want to figure it out but there is limited information to work with. Example last night, I dreamed of trying to move a desk while riding a bicycle. The reason is I'm in school(desk) and I worry my computer skills(bicycle) aren't good enough. I also dreamed about a mistake I made long ago and my mind is reminding me not to make that mistake again. Our minds are trying to help us thru life and we can use all the help we can get. It's called survival.

There are many kinds of dreams, some can be premonitions, some just rewinding deeps thoughts of the day, some can be triggered by normal medication as medicine does have a drowsy effect on people. Your thought sabout swings or or the girl with the fringe, it just means that something about what you saw may have impress you one way or another and that tends to dominate your dream thoughts too.

I know dreams have have meaning for sure , no doubts, especially premonitions ones as I have these both while awake and asleep. Some dreams are just nothing much too, just the brain rewinding the days thoughts or fears.

Some dreams may have more meaning than we really realize, even though the doctors know that they are filters for our conscious mind (working while we sleep) that allow us to organize our thoughts in an orderly fashion. On the other side of that coin, possibly prophetic dreams have been on record since the dawn of time. Sometimes I have dreams that appear to fall into such a category. But usually they don't, so they are just filters for my sick head, I figure. Good question! Thanx.

Dreams some times may mean a thing like you gave the examples of, but as whole are meaningless. It's the function of a mind and considered a healthy sign for our mental growth.Even after more than a century ,no definitive conclusions are available on the subject.

hmm.... dream commonly is just a type of mind play. reoccurring dream such as going school mean that your mind have record your life routine. while your sleeping your brain just play it as a movie. beside that, it also give some meaning like the fortune event. some dream give us clue on how will happend on the future but it not directly form. it must to be interpret first. if your dreaming about your daily routine, it just a mind play but if it very unusual dream like having air crash. it probally mean something. anyway there are a lot of skill to interpret dream. let be know your dream, maybe i can interpret it.

Anyone can give you examples of dreams they have had coming true. I would tell you that dream interpretation is a natural gift given by the Lord God. There is a quote in scripture by Joseph (the one sold to traders, journey ended in Egypt as a slave, eventually was named as the "governor" of Egypt). He told the Pharoah of Egypt "Dreams are given by God, so is the interpretation of the dream." It is a gift given that takes time, experience and insight to develop.

According to Dreamcrowd:

To see a kaleidoscope in your dream, signifies diversity and fragments or various aspects that is coming together. It also foretells that you will have difficulties in choosing a career path.
