I suggest you don’t do it alone. There are a lot of arseholes out there. You should be with at least 1 friend, preferably a male friend, but female if you want. Safety in numbers. If you’re with a guy friend then people that are likely to hassle you would leave you alone, assuming that he is your boyfriend/ partner / etc. I know many people that have travelled around Australia, and they also recommend you do it with others, It is also useful in case there is an emergency, E.g you have an accident. You need to go down the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, Great Australian Bight in South Australia, Fremantle or Perth in Western Australia, Gulf of Carpentaria Northen Territory, and Manly / Bondi / Palm Beaches in New South Wales. Have fun and stay safe!

A good book to get you going is Bill Bryson's "Down Under". It is entertaining and informative. I have travelled round Australia a few times and am off again in three weeks. Take your time is the best advice - and give the Gold Coast a miss, it is a tacky tourist trap.

Hitchhiked around it when I was in my teens, 20 odd years ago. Worked around it in my twenties - agricultural pursuits mostly. Now I am driving it on school holidays, showing it to my wife and kids, camping etc. Just get out there and do it and worry about the money and career prospects later....
