It is honored but not much significance in Islam actually. There are few versions of the origin:

1) The stone fell from heaven during the time of Adam and Eve. It was once a pure and dazzling white, but has turned black because of the sins it has absorbed over the years.
2) The stone was found by Abraham and Ishmael when they were searching for stones with which to build the Kaabah. They feel it is a good stone to be one of Kaabah's cornerstones.
3) It was given by Archangel Gabriel to Abraham as part of the stones to build Kaabah.

The second caliph, Umar, once said "No doubt, I know that you are a stone and can neither harm anyone nor benefit anyone. Had I not seen Allah's Messenger [Muhammad] kissing you, I would not have kissed you." Some Muslims believe that kissing the stones symbolises our respect to the Prophet Abraham. Other than that, there is no clear function of the stone and it is not even mentioned in the Quran.

A hadith from Tirmidhi may indicate the stone's significance but I'm not sure whether the hadith is widely accepted,

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas said: The Messenger of Allah said concerning the Stone: "By Allah, Allah will bring it forth on the Day of Resurrection, and it will have two eyes with which it will see and a tongue with which it will speak, and it will testify in favour of those who touched it in sincerity."

Just remember that regardless how important is the stone, it is a stone and God's creation that neither give benefit nor harm. Only Allah (God) can benefit and harm anyone.

Hajar-e-Aswad is not an ordinary stone. It was brought from heavens by the Archangel Jibriel to be affixed in a corner of the wall of Kaabah. The traditions say that it was like a shining gem when it was brought but the sins of the children of Adam caused it to blacken. There are inferences from some traditions and some of the words of the prayers said at Kaabah that it has the records of all the human beings affirmation of Allah’s Lordship in the nether world before the man was sent to earth. When a person kisses it or raises a hand to it in affirmation, his actual deeds are tallied with his original covenant recorded in it and his sins and deviations from his covenant are imprinted on it in the form of blackness. How? We do not know. May be after some time when the science is more advanced, we will be able to understand the record of all the human beings as we understand huge records in a small zip drive today.

To those who may call it a myth or fairy tail, Hazrat Umar, the second Caliph had provided a simple answer. He once said before the Hajar-e-Aswad: Thou hast no power. Thou art a stone, a creation. I kiss thou only because the Prophet (Pbuh) had kissed you.

hope it answered ur Q ,,if not then dont hesitate to ask watever u r confused about.

History Of Hajar Aswad

Hajar Aswad means black stone. This stone originated from heaven. It is attached to the coner of the wall of Kaabah which was first built by Adam .It is attached to the wall before the door of Kaabah on the left side because it is a sign for starting the tawaaf just walking around the kaabah 7 times by paying a prayer if we want to pay hajpilgrimage or umrah.According to history Allah gave the stone for a memory that Adam and Eve dropped from heaven to this earth because of their sins. When Abraham with his son Ismael rebuilt the kaabah (Allah's house) which had been broken by a flood,he put the stone on the wall of Kaabah In.Muhammad pbuh era the Kaabah was renovated.THe leaders of Quraish quarrelled.Muhammad pbuh gave a wise solution when the leaders of Quraish each of them wanted to elevate the stone to the wall.Muhammad pbuh spread out his cloth and laid down the stone on it and then this cloth was taken up by six Quraish leaders together.Kaabah is the center of this earth. The stone will be kissed by most of muslims who went there because they followed the example of Muhammad pbuh. But it is not a symbol for worshipping a stone. The stone can not give a benefit or difficulties to humans. It is special because it is given by Allah from heaven..Stone is only a stone..

Agreed to those answers above: It's just a stone!
(There might be thousands or hundred of thousands of element which is more amazing than this Al-Aswad) except it has prophets story with it.

Please, leave it as "just a stone" ...like Umar, 2nd Caliph, said

as for edited question:
Why did Muhammad (PBUH) kissed it.
It is "shalaf", Means: sometimes we don't know why Fajr have 2 raka'ah or wudlhu could wipe fart

If Muhammad (PBUH) kissed it, let's do it for him. Not for the stone!
