You need to watch some movies from the 40's and 50's. In those movies there are a lot of characters that have the same problem. How some of them resolved it, however, was:
He walked into a store and bought a small trinket and took it to the counter. As the woman opened the cash register the man stared at her, smiling. When she noticed, she began to look nervous. And then he said something along the lines of "Oh, i'm sorry. I was just looking at your beautiful face, you're husband must be very happy to have such a beautiful woman by his side." There you will get your answer without having to pop the question, "are you married?" because her reaction will either be something like "Oh, yes, my husband is very happy." or "Oh, no, i'm not married, but thank you." :)

If you shop there often enough she should know your face by now. If you are not doing the creepy smile and stare thing, break the ice by asking her for a woman's opinion about an item you are buying, it's non threatening because that's what she's there for. If she's wearing a name tag use her name when you talk to her, if she's not wearing one ask her what it is so you know who to call if you need any more help. I wouldn't be as forward as to ask her out the first time you do this, but on your second or third visit ask her if she'd like to join you for a cup of coffee or something. She works in retail so there's bound to be something close by.

While you are purchasing whatever it is, ask her if she'd like to get coffee or ask her something about the store. Don't clam up and be shy. Just try as hard as you can to not be so shy and its worth a shot. Good luck! = )

if your spending all your moolah just to have a look at that girl then why can't you go ahead and try and make a light conversation with her... i don't think you're gonna offend her... this way you'll get to know about her relationship status and whether she's interested in you... go ahead dude... take your plunge.. don't worry about the consequences.

For starters, look at her ring finger, if there's none there, start up a conversation. Ask her if she would like to see that shirt, you are buying, on her boyfriend. If she has none, she will say so.
