skin tanning AND skin lightening, whitening or bleaching are not permanent.. there's maintenance required.. but bleaching maintenance only requires minimal product usage to keep skin that way..
just like any other skin care products, continuous use of for example skin lotion or hair conditioner is needed to maintain soft skin or hair, right?.. after all, you wouldn't want your old skin problem back.. makes sense?.. :-)
there are safe and effective products too, like the ones i'm using right now.. success in skin lightening or whitening does not rely on products alone.. here's a good article to guide you how to do it - safely and effectively -

You know, very good question. I myself have tanned in a tanning bed , knowing how harmful it is, just to get a nice dark tan. No one has ever said anything to me about "self hate" or trying to be someone I am not. But your right, when I know of black people who use skin bleaching cream, they get told they are not staying true to themselves and are sell outs. It is a complete double standard and I really don't understand why now that you asked?!?!

yes it works, but you have to use it until you get the desired results and then of course stay out of the sun, tanning beds etc...and as your skin is sloughed off you have to retreat your new skin, but be careful as skin bleach does have some adverse affects and can permanently damage your skin via scaring.

skin bleaches only affect the epidermis or dead layer of skin, as this skin is always coming off there is no permenant effect. Some skin bleaches have been known to damage and scar skin permenantly. were I you, I would avoid them.

well i'm guessing skin bleach is permanent because bleach is lightning product that IS always permanent since it contains peroxide. So yeah it does work,I don't think you should dye your skin because it might get pale so it won't look good.
