I had a blood test done this morning. I needed to fill 7 tubes of blood, however, by the time I got to tube 4 the blood had started to stop coming out. So it only got filled up half way & the final 3 tubes only got a tiny amount in them. The nurse kept trying to drain a little more but nothing would come out. I'm Aneamic, my mother thinks my low iron level is the reason I didn't have enough blood, but is that the actual reason? & is it even possible to run out of blood so to speak when having blood taken?

Also, i'm not a vegetarian but I don't like to eat meat, so what are some other iron rich foods I can have instead?

I'm a medical technologist and I have drawn blood on perhaps over several thousand patients in my career. I'm not sure why they would need 7 tubes of blood. I do all the tests in a hospital labortory that doctors order, and many times a phelbotimist of nurse will ask me how much blood to draw for certain tests. Even when a doctor orders a huge menu of tests, I don't think I have ever had to draw that many tubes. You may want to check with the lab where the tests are being done to see how much blood they need. A nurse most likely would not know that information. There is some plausable reasons why the blood stoped flowing. Every time a tube is removed from the blood collection device and another one is put on, the needle will move slightly. It is very difficult to hold the needle in the exact same place every time. What happens is the vein gives out or blows, or the needle goes right through the vein, or gets pulled back out of the vein. It is quit likely that the vein blew, which explains why only a tiny amount filled in the last few tubes. I my experience, when a vein blows, it is next to impossible to get any more blood from it. Drawing 7 tubes of blood wont drain you dry however.

someone's physique is extremely inner maximum or maybe the seen somebody else invading it (pin prick, needle, etc.) would reason substantial misery for a lot of persons through loss of non-public administration. The sight of their very own blood would be especially distressing. In a similar way buddies can tickle you yet you may no longer tickle your self (different than possibly with a feather interior the ear) because you nonetheless be on top of issues. you're actually not sick. If the technique became recurring (blood donor, etc.) you does no longer think of two times approximately it because you will understand that the technique advance into useful and the newness would be long gone.

It's common to not be able to fill up 7 tubes of blood. The phlebotomist should use a butterfly needle, and after using the veins in both arms, use the ones in the back of your hand. Other foods that contain lots of iron are beans, spinach (raw spinach in the produce section is good,)dried fruits, (prunes, figs, dates,)and whole grains. (They sell Kashi Go Lean cereal at WalMart and Health stores. It's great!! And buy good bread.) Good luck, hon! :)

YOu have to drink a lot of water to really let the blood flow.

Another thing is your body has a safety mechanism that stops blood going to the extremities when it feels threatened or anxious. That is why many people faint or feel like their legs are going out from under them when they get scared or anxious.
You body shuts down flow to the extremities to make sure the heart has enough. It is a human thing , nothing to do with the individual.

Well, rest assured you didn't 'run out' of blood, lol...the more likely scenario is that the vein they were using wasn't pumped up quite enough or they just picked a bad vein.
If you're anemic and vegetarian talk you your doctor about taking iron supplements.

it could even be related to the fact that your metabolism dropped so the blood flow reduced gradually...

i was anaemic too...i took iron tablets and minerals everyday for a couple of months and now my H level is normal and i still take those iron tablets during my periods
