Go into a newsagency or bookshop and look for a copy of the "Dog & Lemon Guide" There is a recent edition dated 2007. This is a NZ publication and also comes out in Australia. It lists most car and light commercial vehicle models available in the two countries over the past ten or more years. It rates vehicles from "Recommended" to "Avoid Like the Plague" safety from "Good" to "Deadly" and reliability from "Good" to "Appalling".

It also invites manufacturers to sue it and says it has mountains of documentary evidence and plenty of disgruntled buyers ready to be witnesses in such a case. So far as I know, none of the manufacturers have sued.

It will also give you an idea of prices, but you can check that by looking on-line yourself.

If you are at all doubtful about the right of a current owner to sell, give the vehicle a big miss. If the vehicle is being sold by an established dealer however, the chances that the ownership is dodgy are pretty low.
