In the military, an enlisted soldier or sailor signs up for a definite term of service, usually 3, 4, or 6 years. They may not quit except under dire circumstances. When they leave the service it is called being "discharged." There are basically three types of discharge; honorable, dishonorable and medical. Those are self explanatory. Other than the military, enlisted means "signed up for" or recruited, as in "I enlisted her help in answering this question" or "We enlisted 5 people to be on the committee." Hope this helps a little. peace

In a military environment enlisted means someone has agreed to sign a contract to serve in the military for a given period of time. It is an old phrase and refers to a time when men with little or no skills or education served in the military.
An officer is one with a professional skill and/or education. Generally they are not under a contract.
But by signing the contract or agreeing to be an officer one gives the government/military a lot of power to hedge on the terms of the contract.

Enliste describes all armed forces personnel in pay grade E-1 through E-9 and includes those also known as non-commissioned officers. They enter the service by way of a contract for a fixed number of years and compete for promotion through exams and performance ratings. Commissioned are officers who receive a commission from the President, with the advice and consent of the Senate, and who serve at the pleasure of the President for an indeterminate number of years. They cover pay grades O-1 to 0-9. They compete for promotion mainly through their performance ratings being considered by a board of higher ranked officers who make recommendations to the President of those who they feel should be promoted. That list is also approved with the advice and consent of the Senate.

Best way I can think to explain it is, Enlisted men/women are the workers and the officers (commisioned) are like the bosses and CEO's

Enlisted are the lower ranks, you might say "blue collar" as opposed to the "white collar" commissioned officers.
Basically officers decide WHAT is to be done, senior enlisted (non-commissioned officers) decide HOW it is to be done, and the lower enlisted DO.
