It's neither and yet can be both when viewed in parts. It's a kind of a journey through a tunnel which keeps widening as one travels forward.Further and further we go, wider and wider it becomes but never really seems to end, at least for the human beings, primarily due to end of our lives. It's fleeting in a sense that it gets outdated and appears to be eternal ,because we never see it's end( of the tunnel).Hope it gets some what nearer to your expectations.

Knowledge is eternal as long as consciousness is and consciousness is something that neither fades or disappears.

As long as their is light, there is knowledge. Experiential knowledge does not fade, it is within the consciousness, although a higher level of conscious being, but consciousness none the less, where pure light and intellect reside, of which you truly are. Some call it the being of light, some call it the authentic self, some people call it Clear light mind. Regardless of the name it is pure intellect.

Plus all things return to their source, if a part of us of returns to the earth a part of returns to what has expressed the essential essence.
