It just all of a sudden started tonight and it comes and goes. However it seems to come when I'm trying to go to sleep. It kind of moves all around, from my shoulders to my side, to the front, to my back, but all on the left side. And when it's worse is in the lower back, just above my bottom. Any ideas?

Please don't say go to the doctor, because it's 1 am and I really can't go at this time of night.

Also it's not like regular muscle pain, it feels different. Sorry I can't be more descriptive on that, but it just doesn't feel like my normal stiff back.

lower back pain, yea we all suffer from it. One: you say it moves. muscle pain moves ( I know-- you don't want to hear that). All the moving around pain could also be caused by constipation, or IBS. It's probably not your appendix--it's on the right side. Gas pain can be excruciating and will move around. Sudden shoulder upper back pain can be indicative of heart attacks in women over 50. Heard enough to keep you up all night?

And yea, if you wake up with it, go see a doctor. the internet is full of WRONG information and you have no way of filtering it out. ANd if it's really bad the ER is open all night

Well Tiny Dancer, you just opened one of the biggest can of worms in medical mysteries. For now the rule of thumb is apply ice for the first 24 hours, then heat. Oh and if you have aspirin, tylenol or ibuprophen get some into you stat!

Aspirin is best but in a clinch?........ The problem with backs, is that are they are so complex. Dr.'s know the anatomy but this is of little help for a lot of people. You need X-Rays, although unless somethings broken, or very obvious you get a script for anti-inflamatories, Physio, and prayers from the million of back sufferers. Your age, time you've been dancing, type of dancing would help.

Mechanism of injury is needed also,i.e. what were you doing, what hurts most then and now?. Lets be optamistic and say it's a pulled muscle. If you put gentle but firm pressure on your lower back, working up, side to side, you'll eventually curse me, but find the "Trigger Point".

A pillow betwen the knees helps some, or under the knees. But whatever works. No one should stay bed ridden for more than 48 hours, as research has changed the "rest is best" theory.

To keep from getting worse by stiffining up, (your sprain will pull the whole back out of whack pdq),
try lie on the floor with knees bent, arms straight out from shoulders for balance, and GENTLY,
keeping legs together, slowly try touch each knee to the floor, hold for 10 seconds and return to center and do the other side. Make sure you are warmed up before your dance, and I wish you a speedy recovery.

My husband has a really bad back...he just went to a spine surgeon and had an MRI on his back, they said that his bottom disc is Crushed and the one above that is herniated and bulging, it causes a TON of lower back pain and it goes down his left leg. the only way to really know is unfortunately to go to a Dr and get a Rx for an MRI, but only if this is a chronic thing that you cant live with or stand...if it goes away maybe it isn't worth the effort, maybe just take a ibuprofen and rest and it will go away.

If it is keeping you awake take a warm shower and take some Tylenol.

Sounds like you might have a pinched nerve..but it is from your shoulders to your side is a bit idiopathic (unknown cause)

Left side could be heart issues, but it sounds more like a nerve issue. Are you nauseated? Sweating profusely?
shortness of breath? If you have those symptoms with the left sided pain. go to the ER or dial 911. But, I don't think it sounds like a heart attack.

You know your body better than any of us do here. Of it keeps happening call your doctor. It might be a one night thing from some stretching or lifting you did today.

Get some sleep

Hot shower to loosen up your muscles. Then ice (wrap up a big bag) and use that for 15 - 20 minutes. Take some Advil or something too if you can. Lastly, if the pain goes down you leg, get to the doc in the morning. Outside chance it could be lumbar spine issues or pulled muscle or... Good luck.

Might be gall bladder....or like they said above kidney. What about a UTI too?... DOc in the morning does sound like your best bet if you can make it.

It sounds like you have a kidney infection or you are trying to pass a kidney stone. I hope for your sake it is not a stone. The pain can be excrutiating. Take some Advil or Tylenol and call a doctor in the morning if you are still hurting.

it could be your Kidneys. Also could be if you've just worked out you may have pulled a muscle. If you we're working out or doing anything out of the ordinary you may have a pinched nerve too. Try heating the area that hurts, warm towel, bath etc. Hopefully it'll be better in the morning.

Could be kidney problems. Drink some water, take panadol, try to sleep and call the doctor in the morning.
It sounds more like a nerve problem though. did you do anything strenuous today or yesterday?

Sounds like gas, and gas can be quite painful and move around like you mentioned. Take an anti-gas pill or eat some greens and fruit. Before long you will be good as new.

You are suffering from sciatic problem & Slip disc also, follow these :
When mother Nature has provided us with such a simple and easy treatment to cure diseases and even to avoid them we all must follow the instructions given by her. These Therapies only help Nature to cure us. Let us not ignore Nature in our mad pursuit of science. THIS NATURE'S 'DO IT YOURSELF' ACUPRESSURE THERAPY ITSLEF IS A SCIENCE AND NOT A MATTER OF BELIEF. Try this Therapy sincerely and regularly for at least 15 days and observe its wonderful and amazing result.

Due to malfunctioing of sciatic nerve your legs are asleep. Thus, it is very vital that the sciatic nerve works properly. For this reason sitting erect is necessary and the following daily exercise will be found very useful.

In the morning stand erect keeping the legs 12/15 inches apart. Raise the hands and try to go backward from the waist as much as possible inhaling at the same time. Then come forward and bend from the waist with extended hands while exhaling at the same time. It will be observed that due to improper sitting and sleeping practice, the sciatic nerve is contracted and it may not be possible to touch the ground.

However, when this exercise is repeated, you will be surprised to observe that not only are you able to touch the ground but even go further touching behind the legs. Thus, the spinal cord gets fully streched and flow of energy is ensured all over the organs.

It is observed that due to the unexpected jerks and lifting of heavy things, cold, wearing of high heeled shoes, etc. the sciatic nerve gets damaged, causing pain in the legs from waist to toes, knees, etc. There is no damage to vertebrae and so the root cause is not detected even in X-rays. However, when pressed on the points of sciatic nerve (from the ankle ball to culf muscle i.e. 4 inches) pain will be felt. After the treatment on the points of sciatic nerve in both the legs, all pain in the legs including knee pain will subside.

Sciatic nerve : When this nerve is pinched awkwardly and constantly, there is pain in hips, thighs and legs. Acupressure treatment to be given on the points related to sciatic nerve i.e. on the back of the palms (point N0. 9 ) and the lower portions of the legs ( from the ankle ball to uper side upto 4" inches both iner & outer side). It has been observed that faster relief is obtained by giving treatment on the points of the sciatic nerve in the legs for about 5-6 minutes.

Do this : Take a cushioned bed 1 & 1/2 to 2 feet wide and 6 to 7 feet long and 18 to 30 inches in height. Ask the patient to lie down on stomach and keep a soft small pillow (14" x 14") under the chest. Then, 3 strong straps are to be tightened - one as much high as possible between vertebrae No.5 and 9. The second one is to be tightened in the middle of the buttocks and third one is to be tightened on the middle of spinal cord. These straps are to be tightened as possible so that the body does not move but not so tight that the patient finds difficulty in breathing. Then take the head of the patient in both the hands and rotate it slowly but steadily and with as much pressure as possible in a round, circle, upper, sideways down the other side and rotate it for 3 to 4 times without giving jerks.

Then ask the patient to relax the head and keep it down on folded hands. Now go to the lower side of the body. Lift one leg and slowly bend it so that the heel touches the buttock. Then follow the same process with the other leg. Repeat 3 times. Then take both the legs and bend them slowly on both the buttocks simultaneously. In the first sitting do not give more pressure. The patient may find pain, may cry out in agony for half a minute. But afterwards, there will be great relief as the sciatic nerve gets freed. If necessary, repeat this treatment after one to two days.
