File a 1040X for the tax return that you want to remove him from. That will enable him to claim himself on his own tax return. You'll need to file an amended California state tax return as well. And with filing the 1040X and amended California return you will owe additional tax, since you'll lose the dependent exemption, which was 3,300 for 2006.
Don't know if that will enable him to then receive the financial aid from the school though, since they already know that you had claimed him as your dependent. I would check with the college first to see if he will be able to get financial aid with knowing that you only changed the tax return to get him the aid.

You will need to file an amended return. If you file the amended return with a tax preparer, say HR Block, they will submit it and give you a copy of the amended return the same day you file (I think it costs $45). When the amended return is complete and your son is not on it, then go ahead and have him fill the FAFSA with just HIS information. You are not required to add your parents income if they did not claim you for taxes.
So, in short, get the form you need to amend the taxes (like 1040x or something), have him go back and put 0 down for income last year, then his EFC (Estimated family contribution) should be zero. He will then get the maximum amount for the Pell Grant and all Federal Stafford loans. I just completed the process in under a month. Its not that hard. Hit me up if you need further assistance.

You are allowed to remove a dependent from your tax return by filing an amendment.
However, this may not result in your son qualifying for financial aid, since he qualifies as your dependent even though you may remove him from your return.
Before you change your return (and pay the IRS the tax benefits you received from claiming your child), speak to a knowledgable person at the college financial aid office to see if removing your dependent child from your tax return is going to qualify him for additional financial aid.
The FAFSA form does not allow an applicant to omit parental information based on whether the student is listed as a tax dependent.

You can file an amended return dropping the claim to his exemption.
If he doesn't live with you any more, then you weren't allowed to claim him anyway. But if he'd just temporarily away because he's in school, then you'd be allowed to claim him as long as the other rules are met, in which case he couldn't claim himself anyway even if you DIDN'T claim him.
