I'm answering this question mainly because the previous answer seemed to me inadequate. I have had extreme anxiety in my lifetime and overcame it but have never been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Rather I am diagnosed schizophrenia paranoia.

Fear is a normal basic emotion so is some anxiety.Anxiety disorder is a lasting fear that interferes with your normal functioning. It, like all fears, can be overcome by discovering and facing what you fear. The fear may not be conscious to you all the time. Medications can take the edge off anxiety but really the only way to overcome it is to discover what you fear and bravely face it. Counseling may be necessary to uncover subconscious fears.

Coping is enduring the anxiety and that is ill advised. Adequate coping is doing something about the source of your fears Anxiety should not be something that lasts because it is a natural signal that something is wrong with your environment, your thinking or your behavior. Your body is prepared for flight or to fight and if you don't or can't do either this preparation becomes a pathology. What is necessary is to do something about the source of fear before it becomes a habit.

Good luck in facing your fears, good mental health, peace and love!

Once I was a very outgoing, spontaneous person. Now I'm too afraid to get into a car to leave town! I've been taking meds for my anxiety/panic disorder and so far all it has improved is the will to go on. I'm only 25 and it feels like my life is going to end any day. I always feel like I'm going to die of some disease or something! But you probably already know what that's like. Its hard for me to deal with this because I live in a very small town in which I leave to go shopping, but now I can't even leave because as soon as I see that highway I freak! And also coming from a small town not many people understand this problem, so everyone thinks I'm just plain crazy. You know how it feels like you can't breathe sometimes when your having an attack? I know it sounds weird, but I always have a supply of Extra Strength Halls on hand for those times. It helps a little bit to suck on those when you can't breathe. And yes I feel detached from the world a lot. I hate it! Even the simplest things, like a strong wind, seems everything that its not, if you know what I mean. I also found that if your having an attack, a good way to distract your mind from it is to play video games. I used to never play video games and lately I do a lot! And don't let yourself hyper-ventalate. I know that's easier said than done, but its true. Force yourself to breathe SLOWLY even when it feels like your going to lose control. It takes practice. I'm just beginning to learn how to breathe. You have to think about how you felt when you weren't having an attack and how you breathed. Well, that's all the tips I've learned so far. I'm really hoping this anxiety thing becomes just a memory of the past for everybody.

I do. I seek counseling & confide in a friend. I can't cope with it on my own. When I'm having a panic attack, breathing into a brown paper bag doesn't help. Meds don't help, either.
