I have been studying Martial Arts, weapons, physical fitness and self defense for over 40 years. I taught kenpo karate from October 2003 until May 2007. The proprietor of first place I taught went out of business due to a lack of advertising. The second and last place I taught (Tilton Fitness Center) refused to allow advertising within the business for my instruction. It is very difficult to retain students and attract new ones without advertising, which can be very expensive. I reside in the Atlantic County area of NJ. If anyone out there can help or guide me in a positive direction it would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you are in need of a Martial Arts or Self Defense instructor for your business and you are local to me please send an email to senseimiller@comcast.net.

Sorry to hear about the schools closing, but its a tough business.

I would suggest to get together as many phone books from nearby cities as possible. Call every YMCA, Fitness Center, and straight Martial Arts studio in every city. I would create a script for the phone calls. You can modify it as you call around and find out what works best.

This isn't going to be easy though. First you have to somehow get to the person who actually makes the decisions. Maybe start with getting an appointment with the Director of your local YMCA or YWCA, as they are going to be nice no matter what. They also network a lot so could give you some solid leads.

If you put the effort into it, there is certainly someone out there looking for your skills. But, I don't know anyone who would hire someone off of the Internet or even over the phone, unless you had previously met. You need to get face to face with someone.

First thing though might be to define exactly what sort of scenario would be ideal for you. A focused presentation can get a lot more attention. It can also make it a lot easier for you to focus your time on whether you want to teach a few classes at the community center, or work in a full service health facility.
Aside from what styles you can teach, you need to present what hours you are willing to work, and if you are willing to do anything else around the club between classes.

Good Luck

I was recently hire at the local YMCA to head off a self-defense program for kids and adults.

Check them all out since they might not be all run by the same administration.

Parks and Recreation also have programs.
