It would really help us to help you if you told us what you want to use it for. Example= Hunting ? Target Shooting? Do you have a budget or price in mind that you are willing to pay ? Answers to these few questions will really narrow down the possibilities, and make it easier to suggest different types, models or calibers to you.Thanks......

If you will be hunting heavily wooded areas, a Marlin M-336 in .30-30 WCF, or .35 Rem would be a good choice. Either will do well for deer or black bear at moderate ranges, under 150 yards, but if you want to do a lot of bear hunting, the .35 Rem might be a better choice.

If you are hunting more open country, a .308 Win or .30-'06 would be just the ticket. Savage M-110's are great value for the cost. I like the .308's better because the actions are shorter and handier for fast repeat shots.

The shotgun choice depends on what you how to use it. For an all-purpose bird hunting, deer hunting, duck hunting, home defense, sporting clays/skeet shotgun, a pump-shotgun would be the best choice. My preference is for the Mossberg 500, but the Remington M-870 is the most popular pump gun on the market.

If you want a shotgun for upland bird hunting and/or skeet, a double barreled shotgun, either side-by-side or over/under would be a good choice. Unfortunately it is also an expensive choice. Your best bet would be to find a used double. A Stevens M-311 is a good workman-like shotgun with no frills that can generally be found at modest prices. Another good choice would be a Fox Model B (the successor of the much more expensive A. H. Fox shotguns). The Model B's are about as good as any field grade double gun ever made in America, and prices are relatively modest, considering the quality.

I just bought a brand new Savage 30-06, bolt action, synthetic stock, came with an adjustable scope and strap for $525. CAN+tax. My first firearm other than pellet guns. I'll me using it for moose or deer.

I have been researching this for a while, and it seems that Savage gets excellent reviews, especially for the price.

A rifle is much better for deer and moose than a shotgun because it has a much greater range, but check to make sure high-powered rifles are allowed for hunting in your area.

Well, congrats on contemplating firearm ownership. You need to know a whole lot more about owning a firearm, about the responsibility and safety involved and you need to know what you want to do with it and from there you can decide between the two.

A rifle and shotgun may look somewhat alike, but they are very different in how they work.

A good recommendation for a beginner is a .22 rifle. Somewhat inexpensive, cheap to shoot and a lot of fun.

bolt action, 30-06 rifle is very well rounded with ammo being common to get. Alot of different loads depending on the situation.

A decent one with scope package is about $400.00

this is a deer rifle, medium size game rifle. if you want to just learn get a .22 cal rifle as other folks have stated. I enjoy Ruger 10/22's

Before you buy anything, you have to sit down and assess your needs. What are you going to use this gun for primarily?
One of the best shotgun availabe is the pump Remington 870 Express model, which sometimes can be had for under $200.This gun had been around since 1950, it is super reliable and accessories can be had to modify it to your taste.

A shotgun and a rifle are different tools for different jobs.

A semi auto shotgun maybe a good starting gun as it has less recoil.

A .22LR (Rimfire) should be a good starting rifle. Its cheap to feed and can be a lot of fun.

really depends on what you are getting the gun for. if it is just for plinking around i would go with something small like a .22 or even .177 or .223. they are cheap to shoot and accurate and cheaper to buy as far as the guns. if you want an all around shot gun, just buy a simple 12 gauge.
