Yes....Not only for entertainment, but primarily most religious teachers will follow under tradition or entertainment to put power into their message...too bad such devotion does not seem as prevalent in day to day practice of the message itself.

I know the Pentecostal churches believe in talking in tongues.
And being struck down by the Holy Spirit. I went with a friend
who took me as her guest to a church like that. And I was so
shocked later in the service when a very elderly man who was
being touched on the forehead by the minister, fell back and
was laid down by two aides who helped him. I thought he'd
had a heart attack. He laid so still and didn't even look like he
was breathing, with his eyes closed. I had to leave and wait
in the car, i was so shook up. They are called, "Holy Rollers"
also for some dance and roll around in the aisles during the
music sessions during the programs.
The more dramatic a minister can be to keep his parishon-
ers to keep coming back, the better it is. They rely on hefty
donations to keep their church going, and it's costly to keep
up a building that size. So if they can get willing parishoners
to volunteer during services, the congregation is oohed and
awed by the displays of being "slain in the spirit", as it's
called. It is a milder form of what the TV evangelists do on
TV. But for the same purpose. It's all about the money.

I was in between churches and searching for a new one. 2 that I went to seemed great but when I really sat back and observed, the Pastor's seemed to me to have a huge ego. I even went up to one of them after the service and he was completely unavailble and disinterested. A wet blanket feeling came over me. The other one, not sure. We'll see. No tounges but a lot of inside jokes. Your gut knows what is what. If it feels stinky, it is.

Your experience doesn't sound very entertaining. I've been to a few loony churches and plenty that follow the Saddleback formula of church marketing too. Thankfully, today I'm at a church that relies on the Holy Spirit for all its needs. What a blessing!

I've seen this in my church.
I have fallen down before under the power of God in the place - but only once.
The truth is GOD will not do anything to you if you are not ready or scared in any way - He wont hurt you.
As for your pastor!? Why is he spitting?
Sounds very strange to me - like he is forcing the issue. I would find another church personally - or confront him about it. He is there to lead you to GOD and Jesus and teach you the word. Not to spit on you. He took it too far.

depends on who is preaching and which form of preaching they are using during that sermon. some pastors don't allow the Holy Spirit to use them to teach the congregation about the truths of the Bible.
they start off with a depressing level of low spirituality and then stir everyone up with their yelling and shouting and spitting and what not. i sometimes imagine God looking on such preachers and go "What is he trying to prove?"
i mean, by the look of the preliminaries, God knows that we are going to worship Him! then the preacher starts going on and on, wearing out their voice box. i don't think God approves of people damaging their health in an effort to glorify Him.
if we humble ourselves and worship God from our hearts, God is thankful. because such a worship is much more sincere than all the NOISE that comes from the mouth.
of course, the pastor can preach. but his job is not to entertain people. his job is to feed the congregation with the spiritual truths of the Bible!

Absolutely! Even Joel Osteen preaches just for show. Because he doesn't want to hurt anyone's feelings on what God's word says. So he preaches positive thinking. There are becoming more and more preachers who preach for show. Read the book of Jude, he talks all about that.

Of course - they are ALL doing it for show, some just have sillier audiences than others. White people tend to like more conservative shows, no doubt from the Puritan background of repression; other cultures tend to get wilder. Some sects have found success by letting normally uptight and repressed people channel their emotions into "acceptable" outbursts under certain conditions.

Unfortunately, some do. Do not let this experience deter you from seeking God. When I received this gift. It was the best gift I ever got. Seek the indwelling of God's Holy Spirit.
