it really depends on the kind of person you are. Some people loves cops simply because they are cops. Some people hate cops, simply because they are cops. I always tell the haters that just wait until they need your assistance, they might change their mind real fast.

You have to have the energy and the ability to talk to people (cause you will be taking some really irritating cases and reports). But you also have to have the ability to thrive under pressure, say in a foot or car pursuit...
you have to be able to protect yourself and your fellow cops.

I think it's a great job. but it's also scary.

just be prepared, do some ride alongs, see if it is really what you want.

I loved 95 percent of the cops I worked with. They were great people. Just remember you can be nice and stern at the same time...

Don't base your career decision on what other people think. If you think it would be a rewarding career (and it is, I've bben a cop for almost 12 years) then go for it. Most people who disrespect the police are the s*^#bags you're going to be bringing to jail anyways. If you are unsure if it is a career that you would be interested in, go to your local police department. See if they allow ride-alongs. If so, go on a few on different shifts to see what it is like. If you are still interested, see if they have a Police Reserve program or some similar volunteer program that you could join.

It is not the most hated job in the world. I love it and would recommend it to anyone that has a true interest in it.

You have to be the one that respects what you do...doesn't matter if you are a cop or stocking shelves or picking up litter.

If you don't see your job as something a bit special or worthwhile, then you can't expect others to.

As you can see, a lot of coppers wouldn't do anything else...and I'm one of them.

I joined as a teenager and after 18yrs as a sworn officer - I still haven't found another job that's more interesting, challenging or unique.

I think the people that don't trust or respect cops are generally the ones who want to hide from them.

there are those that don't take responsibility for their own actions..(ie..get a speeding ticket but somehow it's the officers fault..not there own for speeding in the first place!)
But, in general..I tend to think police are very respected in what they do
I honestly don't think it's the most hated job in the world.
i agree with the other person who suggested, go talk to someone in the force..see what is really all about.

Actually MOST people do respect police officers and as far as most hated job, well there are politicians, drug dealers, cigarette manufacturers and others who are despised a lot more than cops...

It is by far the greatest job in the world. And in all reality most officers are respected. Under appreciated at times maybe, but 99% of people respect the police.

Even most criminals still realize that fighting with the police is a bad idea, they know that even if they manage to get away they will be hunted down until they face justice.

Being a police officer is a great honor and it is my priviledge to serve my community.

well, really most criminals are the only ones that don't like cops. And also, there are a lot of ****** cops out there.
For instance, my teacher tried sayin hello to a cop twice as he passed by. The cop just ignored him. So he called the cop a jacka** and the cop even heard him too. Just do your job and be friendly!

all the best.

Only the shitbirds won't respect you sometimes, and they really don't matter anyways. Besides, respect is earned, not given. Law enforcement is a great career, and a much needed service.

I want to help people and have a job where I know I make a meaningful difference. That's why I do it. It does not matter how many times I am called a 'pig' or disrespected, I remember why I chose this life when someone says 'thank you'

Well, my brother is a cop, and he loves it. Talk to your local police department, they may allow ride-alongs for interested people. That way you can get a "feel" for what the job is really like. If you love it, go for it.
