You really don't want to do that if you bought a new machine and it came with Vista.

If you bought Vista Basic, upgrade to Home Premium.

If you bought a machine (or on your old machine) you only have 512MB of RAM then upgrade the RAM to 2GB if you can. Vista runs so much better with 2GB.

Vista is what we will all be using eventually when we upgrade our machines since only a few manufacturers will still load Win XP on a new fast machine. (Dell is one)

We use Vista on our new laptop and it works fine. It does have some nice new features, Flip-3D for instance and it still has some poorly designed interface elements.

There are a few things that are harder to do, but generally when using applications everything works just fine. We have disabled UAC and we run the machine as an administrator which does disable some of Vista's security features.
