It's an ego thing for most people. We love to fantasize, and for some it just gets out of hand.

Can you be more specific? Magick is real, and it is black, white or, most often, grey according to the use to which it is put and the purpose or intent of the user. Magick spells of certain kinds DO work, there is no 'belief' necessary (belief in the idea of faith in something). I am a pagan. I work spells. They actually make what I wish to happen, happen, although not always in ways I expect.
As far as why some people believe in 'black magic', the same question could be asked as to why some people believe in miracles, or even God.

From experience.
I was deeply into the Occult and wielded weird powers that frightened people, and strange things happened when I was around. I wasn't the one doing it though, it was due to demon possession, the thing within me had the powers, and it decided when to use them, not me.
People would look in my eyes and see a malevolent intelligence looking back at them, something that frightened them, something they sensed wasn't human. And the aura of evil around me became so great that people could feel me coming through closed doors.
It isn't "magic" as we think of it as such, it is a demonic spirit being using powers they have to make things happen in the physical world.
And one thing I did learn, is that all "black", "white" and "grey" 'magic' comes from the same source, namely Satan, although pagans and witches will deny it. He doesn't need them to worship him, if they practice "magic" he has them anyway.
And take it from someone who has been there, stay well away from any form of the Occult, be it paganism, or magic. It will destroy you in the end, as Satan always takes, and he never gives without a price.

Look at job that could have been thought to have been witch craft when all along it was demonic forces. That is quite possibly all that witchcraft is is demonic powers. God gave his Holy Angels charge over Job and then allowed the hedge of Angels that protected him to be removed. So the whole time it was demonic powers.
