Migraines during pregnancy, frequently get worse due to hormonal effects. As the complete mechanism of migraine is currently theoretical, what role hormones play is still being evaluated.

Migrain management during pregnancy is difficult, as most of the medications that are used to treat migraine are not safe to take during pregnancy. If you are having frequent or severe migraines you may want to talk to your doctor about getting you a referral to see a neurologist or other headache specialist.

Take a cold shower. The cold temperature will help to shrink dilated blood vessels.

Use an ice pack or cold compress. You can put it on the back of your neck or on your forehead to help constrict the blood vessels.

Lay in dark room. Many people are sensitive to lights during a migraine. Staying in a darkened room will help.

Sleep. Sometimes sleep is the only way to get rid of a migraine. If you have a really painful migraine it may be difficult to sleep but laying down and resting will help.

Massage your temples or sinuses. Sometimes massaging your temple or your nasal bridge may relieve help relieve pain.

Get a good night's sleep. Fatigue or not sleeping can sometimes trigger a migraine. Make sure you are well rested.

Avoid caffeine. Caffeine is not recommended during pregnancy and may trigger a migraine in some women.

Consult your doctor about what medications are safe to take during pregnancy or for other treatment options. The treatment options I would most recommend during pregnancy are biofeedback or other forms of relaxation therapy. Your gynecologist should be able to refer you to someone who can help you learn these techniques. Another non-medication option would be accupuncture/accupressure therapy, get your gynecologist approval before trying this techniques.

There are a few medications which can be tried on a case by case basis, but may have some risks. Luckily you are through the first trimester which is often the most significant term with many medications.

Normal? Of course not. However, some women are much more prone to migraines when they are pregnant. Check your temperature, as chills may be fever. Chills and sweating combined with vomiting may also signal something going on abdominally as well, obstructions, hernia, constipation. YOU NEED TO SEE YOUR DOCTOR. Tylenol will seldom do anything for a real migraine.

I've been dealing with migraines since I was in my early 20's. They're mostly hormonal. During my pregnancy they were so bad that the OB had me taking my prescription medication for them during the third trimester. You should probably speak to your obstetrician about this, it could be from the hormones. Not saying you'll be given prescription meds for it, but they might be able to give you some answers and suggestions. Good luck and congrats on the baby.

You should check with your doctor. It could be the changes in your hormones. Ginger is something that helps migraines for most people and doesn't harm a fetus. You could try adding ginger to your diet and see if that helps you. Good luck.

Hm...this is something your doctor should know and be able to tell you. I doubt you are the only one suffering from this, there is probably many more women out there. I do not know for sure if this is "normal", but I really doubt it. You should get this checked out. Congratulations on the baby and I hope nothing but luck and happiness comes to you in the future!
