Without a doubt.

"That dress looks great on you."

"Aubergine is YOUR color."

"You're wearing a toupee? Really?"

I had to think about this one and read the other answers and think some more.

I'd have to say that there is no excuse for lying. It's better to hold your tongue if what you say will cause distress. If you have to say something distressful, you can do it in a tactful, loving way.

As far as the many examples of women asking if an article of clothing makes them look fat, it's not necessary to lie. I have many female friends and they've asked me that question. They are asking because they want an honest opinion, but you don't have to be mean. I just say, "I don't like those or that as much as this or that." They will then try on something else which looks better on them and I can compliment them. I would want a friend to not let me wear something that doesn't look good and I think others do, too.

Once there was a series of episodes on T V that was named COLUMBO. This group of mysteries had a character named Columbo that looked pretty stupid,,but in reality he was very smart. I really like what was said in one of those shows. Sometimes kindness is better than truth. Five words that mean,,,you do not LIE if you just refuse to speak at all.

No, politeness may mean saying nothing, but it is never polite to lie: Honey, does these pants make my butt look, big.
Answer: No your butt makes the pants look to small is rude.
Answer: No, but your black ones are more flattering. Truth without lying.

No no. Kindness means sometimes you hold your tongue and do not answer what they want you to say. You don't have to agree, but you also don't have to be apart of the conversation. You have a choice.
But lying is simply wrong.

If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all. I do not believe lying is polite.

NO, being polite should never cause someone to have to lie, honesty believe it or not is still the best policy. Just say no comment.

No. Lying is always born of selfishness. Being polite is having consideration for another, which is the opposite of being selfish.

There is always a polite way to tell the truth.

Yes if telling someone the truth would cause them distress. If someone you know/care about makes you dinner and its horrible dont tell them its horrible say its good and you like it and do your best to consume it. If they spent all day cooking you something show appreciaction whether its the truth or not
