I don't believe God exists. You've gotten to a good start on the thinking. Keep at it. Here's some of the reasoning that I've put together:

First, you have to define the term "God." The problem with most theists is that this term is a moving target.

In addition, because there is no evidence either for or against the existence of God, you cannot use deductive logic (a+b=c; therefore c-b=a). You can only reach a conclusion by inductive reasoning using the balance of evidence (90% of A is also B; C is B, so the chances are 90% that C is also A).

So to begin with, I will assert (and others may shoot this down) that the only RELEVANT definition of God states that GOD INTERVENES TO CIRCUMVENT NATURAL LAWS.

If God circumvents natural laws, then it becomes impossible to understand natural laws. All scientific findings would have to include the stipulation, "It is also possible that these results are an act of God, a miracle, thereby making our research meaningless."

However, we have been able to expand our knowledge of natural laws (evidenced by every appliance in your kitchen). Therefore, because the scientific method leads to applicable discoveries, and the likely conclusion is that God, at least the intervening kind, does not exist.

Additionally, if God is defined as all loving, all powerful, and all knowing, then it is impossible to explain suffering. Either God is not all loving (he acts sadistically), not all powerful (he cannot prevent suffering), or not all knowing (he created suffering by mistake because he didn't know the consequences of his actions). A God who is not all-loving, all-powerful or all-knowing is also not sufficient for the definition of God, because any God that fails to meet these criteria becomes bound by rules that are greater than God.

If God is bound by external rules and/or does not intervene in our existence, then God is either non-existent or irrelevant. The classic Bertrand Russell argument is that I cannot prove that a china teapot is orbiting the sun between the earth's orbit and Mars. But while I cannot prove this is not true, the evidence against it is compelling.

The evidence against God is equally compelling, and while it is not possible to prove beyond any doubt, it makes enormously more sense to live your life as if there were no God.

It is more compelling to me that humans have invented God (a) to help people deal with the pain and fear associated with death and loss, and (b) to reflect the thoughts of the ruling powers in a particular time. Humans are always searching for explanations. When none were found, it was the natural inclination to declare that the cause of the unexplained was "God" (or gods). As the faith grew, miracles (coincidences) and laws were ascribed to this Divinity, and an orthodoxy grew up around it.

Now it seems unhelpful to believe in such superstition. The only matters that aid in our ongoing well-being are work, location, health, sustenance, and pure, blind luck.

So no, that's why I don't believe God exists. I hope it helps you think things through for yourself.

I am an Atheist because nobody can prove that God exists. When the believers turn that around and ask the Atheists to prove that he doesn't exist, well.. they can't do that. They provided the positive (God DOES exist) so they have to prove it. It's impossible to disprove a negatve (God does not exist) so, the burden of proof is on them. And it seems that after all this time, they still haven't found a way to back their beliefs up with logic and reason.

Now, go figure... I'm an Atheist. Have fun figuring stuff out for yourself, though.

I believe that given the complete and utter lack of proof of any god, it's safe to conclude there isn't one. If I'm out riding my horse and I get struck down by a bright light with a loud voice crying "BOB BOB WHY ARE YOU PERSECUTING ME?!!" maybe then we'll talk about my believing in a god. Up until then, I have no reason to believe in one.

We all want answers, and I can think of nothing more noble than trying to find them. I feel that belief in god(s) is a way of short-circuiting that process, because then "oh, God must have done it!" becomes your answer to everything. Things become absolute, because god must have done it and that's what one believes and that's the end of story. Personally, I'm inclined to think that there are NO answers, we're here and we've got to make what we can of the time we have. Enjoy life, don't be a dick, and treat other people the way you want to be treated - I believe if you can handle that, you're not doing too badly at all. Hope that helps.

I have to be technically agnostic to every claim that is made, even scientific.
But science is special because what it claims, might be weak at the starting point and then from there, it can only get stronger and stronger.
So, many things that science claims, are so strong that we take them for granted, such as gravity and the laws of motion. And it's alright to take these things for granted.
Atheism is the same, in the field of deities.
It's alright to look at the universe and say there is no god.
Actually it's better because you pay attention to the details, which show no need for a god, which is even more intriguing.

I don't think god exists because -

1. There's evidence AGAINST most religious texts and teachings. 2. No one has ever actually given a good, detailed definition of "god" that we can all agree on. The word is rather meaningless without being properly defined. 3. There's no evidence for any god, no matter what definition is used.

"But if you have a meaning of life and why we're here, please tell me so!"

We are here because we have evolved. There is no "purpose". We are the conscious result of unconscious processes.

There is no one meaning to life. You make your own meaning, and in the end your freedom to choose your own meaning will make it that much more meaningful, because it will be a direct manifestation of who you are.

There is no evidence that would indicate that a god exists. Evolution with its massive amount of evidence doesn't have any place where a designer or creator fits in or is needed.

If a deity had intervened we should see evidence of that. Something or anything that would raise a doubt as to how evolution worked without any external intervention.

As it stands, if there were a god, he would be actively hidding any real, hard evidence that he did anything.

There are thousands of contradictions in nature to incline one not to believe in a supreme influence . Just the fact that we live in a natural world tends to deny the belief in a supernatural world . We have no supernatural senses ,instruments or evidence so why place so much stock in an imaginary figment of the mind other than for psychological ploy . people have discounted all previous civilizations of their belief in gods and yet for no good reason refuse to dismiss the modern god of the past two thousand years . Does disease and birth defects fall into the category of divine creation? would an intelligent god allow things to be as lame as they are in our present society ? Most all religious theism is rooted in the superstitious thinking of myths that were founded originally by polytheistic beliefs that primitive man invented of ignorance to explain the questions generated by his instinctual desire for eternity and in response to a beginning that he had no knowledge of .
I've been an atheist for years and my world has not ended nor have I been struck down by lightening . So where is this god that is professed by the unfounded beliefs of others ?
It's sources and development are obvious but it is not .
As knowledge and it's accessiblity grow religious believes diminish.

Yeah I have atheist beliefs.
I think submission to something just because you are told is a test of will, not of faith. Your choice define your life, though it may be short it is worth while and can change the world if you care enough to do it. I refuse to submit to "fate" and follow a god's design for me just so I can say he had other plans for me. I will live my life without regrets, day to day, I will teach my kids to follow what they know is right and that they don't need a storybook to tell them otherwise. I could never support a Church of hippocrits anyway, I mean, catholic priests and evangelicals who mess around with gay prostitutes? Jeez and people say I have morale guidance issues without religion.

I was just raised this way and do not see it as real. It's no more real to me then Santa is to Jewish raised kids. I don't have any big fabulous answers for why I don't believe, just the simple truth that I do not feel it to be real. And honestly that's something a person has to look within themselves for, what their own gut tells them is true.

no god would have created a world where millions of innocent children suffer and die just because of where or how they were born. A god could easily have made an earth better than this one.
