It is a tradition of many religions. The veil is supposed to represent virginity and purity along with the white dress.

In reality, this tradition goes back to the idea of marriage as being one of three great 'sacraments' in one's spiritual life. The first is baptism, where the child is immersed in water and then 'unveiled' or 'revealed' as a pure child of God after the ceremony. In marriage, the veil represents the old life of maidenhood which the bride is hidden behind until her vows are spoken and her husband breaks the barrier between the new and old life. The 3rd sacrament is death, where the veil between the worlds is broken as a soul passes from one realm to the next. The tradition of the veil is now an option, not a requirement for a Christian (and other cultures, btw) bride; just as the wearing of the white dress is no longer absolutely necessary.

All the Christian weddings I've been to the bride had not had a veil. Which ones are you going to?

It is symbolic.. In olden times, the bride wore a veil, signifying she was a virgin. She was given in marriage by her father, who lifted her veil to expose her face when they arrived at the altar - and the symbolism was that he was exposing her to her husband, and giving her over to his care.
Today, it's simply a pretty tradition and very few brides wear the veil over their faces - it's usually just a swatch of tulle that is attached to a headband of some sort and flows behind them.

Not a xtian thing, is present in many cultures.

It has to do with a ritual rebirth. The face is hidden behind the veil and revealed anew upon getting married. They are a "new" person. They, historically anyway, take on a new name and a new role in life.

It's likely just one of those things that began out of superstition, and people just kept doing it because everybody else was. It was supposed to protect the bride on her wedding day from the evil eye of jealous spinsters.

I always thought of it as one of those sweet old customs - the groom is not supposed to see the bride on the wedding day, and when the man finally sees the face of the woman he chose, she is his wife. I know that's not the actual history, but it's how I like to think of it.

Actually, the tradition dates all the way back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. They believed that evil spirits would try to attack and steal the bride before she reached the altar, so brides would dress in bright colors and cover their faces.

The tradition was adopted, and became symbolic of modesty, chastity, and obedience.

Marriage is sacred and therefore the ceremony is meant to be a revealing of the pure and chaste bride.

Sadly few brides are pure and chaste on the wedding day in the western culture today. Most have been with more mates than the typical neighborhood poodle has.
