Did your dog just start drinking a lot of water or has it been doing this for awhile? Often it can be a symptom of Cushings disease or some other ailments. If this is a continuing behavior, you definitely want your Vet to take a look at her and possibly run some tests. If it is very hot out and she is outside and active, she could simply be thirsty.

Off the top of my head:

It's hot
He tipped over his water bowl and has gone without for a little while.
He has an infection somewhere.
He has a bladder infection, or something wrong with his kidneys.
He's become diabetic
He has something wrong with his organs, glands or other innards.

Also, what's "alot"?
Do you know how much he usually drinks? How?
Has anything changed besides the drinking?

Excess water consumption can be a sign of a urinary tract infection or in some cases diabetes, to name just a couple of things. You'll hear this a lot: go see a vet.

Something is causing him to be dehydrated. It could be anything from diabetes to hyperthroidism or an infection of some kind.

You should probably get him checked out by the vet as all of these things could cause death - some more quickly than others.

Could be your dog is hot and thirsty. Also could be that your dog is a diabetic. If this continues, I'd consult your vet.
