Three students checken into a hotel and paid the clerk $30 for a room ($10.00 each). When the hotel manager returned, he noticed that the clerk had incorrectly charged $30.00 instead of $25 for the room. The Manager told the clerk to return $5 to the students. The clerk, knowing that the students would not be able to divide $5 envenly, decided to keep $2 and to give them only $3. The students were very happy because they paid only $27 for the room ($9.00 each). However, if they paid $27 and the clerk kept $2 that adds up to $29. What happened to the other Dollar?

I read somewhere that Britney Spears stole it to buy her outfit for the VMA's.

Nothing happened to the dollar. All the money is accounted for. The students don't know that it was $5 instead of $3. They paid $25, the clerk kept $2, the students received $3. 25+2+3=30

The three paid $27 (9 each). That, less the two the clerk kept equals the $25 the hotel got. $30 isn't the number you have to logically reach, just the number you started with. Once they got the dollar back, you're starting with $27 paid and $30 has no relation to anything

The simple answer is this:

The $2 is already *part* of the $27 paid; it does not get added. The equation is $25 (room) + $2 (clerk keeps) = $27 (total paid [$30-$3]).

you can't really answer this because since the original price was $25, the clerk took the $2 dollars which adds up to $27 dollars, where did the $29 come from?

there is no extra dollar-
$30 - $5= 25
-$3
-$2
3+2=5

Wrong computation. They paid $28 not $27 so there was no extra dollar
