If I were you I would have this done at a Salon, but if you really want to do it at home then try Garnier as a brand.

As for conditioning or products Redken makes a very good line for helping the color last longer and keep it from fading.

Oh and since this is your first time dying your hair I'm guessing it's healthy enough to color without preparation since depositing color is less damaging then stripping(bleaching) the hair.

Good luck bro.

Since you're just starting to get some grays, you don't necessarily need to change the color, just cover the gray. So you go to a store and most any brand will do, but get a semi-permanent. That won't change your hair color, just cover the gray while leaving the hair color the same and adding lots of shine. It's not so harsh on the hair either as it fades out in a few weeks and it won't hurt to do this even once a month. If you wanted, you could also use a couple of shades lighter than your natural hair color and it would give you the look of highlights. Just comb it through all your hair and wait however long the instructions say. It will stop processing after about 15 mins. anyway.
Good luck!

Why dye your hair?? Personally I think a guy looks good with gray hair. I myself was prematurely gray at the age of 16. Most people did not know this, but now it's obvious. Besides gray hair is a sign of maturity & "the silver-haired head is a crown of glory, if it is found in the way of righteousness." Proverbs 16:30

I would get rogaine or just for men, since you are starting to go gray. using anything else is risky becuase you aren't supposed to die gray hair. the box should contain some conditioner with the dye, so once all of that is gone I would use the regular conditioner you have been using, or buy something like garnier(sp)

I like Preference by L'Oreal.
It comes with its own conditioner.
Follow the directions.
I leave it in my hair for 45 minutes...NO LESS...but you should try the instructions first.

:)
