when i did the recovery i backed up all his music and such but after i did the restore it seemed to work but it seems as though none of the software settings are now on the computer framework only no internet connections or programs. i am going to try to do the restore again and see if that helps. he has a dell (if that helps you help me) any suggestions would be great thanks.

The restore CD should put the computer back to its condition when new. That probably does not include most of your applications, like Word, or Excel, or Firefox.
You need to reinstall them from the original CDs.
Internet explorer should be installed by the restore CD but not your internet connections. You have to do that manually also.
You also need to immediately update Windows and all your antivirus programs before doing anything else on the internet.
