You have been deceived by one of the most popular anti-Catholic myths of the day ... which is an often repeated, total and absolute falsehood.
The only sure thing about 666 is that anti-christ ... the man of sin, and the son of perdition ... is revealed in the book of revelation at the time of the 6th vial, and the 6th seal, and the 6th trump .... 666!
I bet they failed to tell you that at the seminar.

The Papal Tiara and the '666' Myth
One common myth surrounding the papal tiara involves the claim that the words Vicarius Filii Dei exist on the side of one of the tiaras.
The myth centres on the widely made claim that, when numerised (ie, when those letters in the 'title' that have roman numeral value are added together) they produce the number '666', described in the Book of Revelations as the number of the Antichrist.
This claim has been made by some fundamentalist protestant sects who believe that the pope as head of the Roman Catholic Church is the antichrist.
Four definitive sources are sometimes given:
- A protestant woman visiting Rome said she witnessed Pope Gregory XVI wearing a crown with the words on it, in or around 1832;
- Pope Gregory XVI had worn a papal tiara with these words clearly visible on it at a Pontifical High Mass during Easter 1845;
- The 'existence' of a photograph of a papal funeral at the start of the twentieth century (which probably means the funeral of Pope Leo XIII in 1903 but could possibly be Pope Pius X's in 1914) showing the words on a papal tiara.
The tiara (with the words mentioned) is always used to crown popes, but specifically was used in 1939 to crown Eugenio Pacelli as Pope Pius XII.
The claim is demonstrably false.
Whether or not the numerised total of the letters in Vicarius Filii Dei produce the total '666' is irrelevant because no such title actually exists for the papacy or the Holy See.
While the words did feature in the Donation of Constantine (now known to be a forged document) they referred to St. Peter and not subsequent popes.
In 1832, only two tiaras existed; one from the sixteenth century and one, given by Napoleon I to Pope Pius VII in 1804. Neither contain writing.

that is some weird s*** you heard. Nonsense. And if you do a little research on 666 you'll find that's all nonsense, too.
One of the pope's legitimate titles would be vicar of Christ, so that part is all okay. It's the assumption that the guy was right about the numbers in Latin (this doesn't sound like an educated person anyway, I bet he can't even spell any Latin), that the numbers mean anything at all, that numerology has meaning (actually think it may, but there are too many approaches for me to accept it) .... yeah, he's an idiot trying to prejudice you against Catholicism.

I don't really agree with Catholicism but I would double check on the Pope's hat translation with another reputable source you trust - that just sounds wrong. The fact that this guy was telling you to add up the numbers in Latin spells fraud and fanatic to me. If I add the numbers associated with the alphabet I can eventually come up with whatever answer I want just by rearranging the words or reversing the numbers and adding them twice and then dividing by 17 and multiplying that by a factor of 1.3.... Whenever tells you to add up the numbers associated with a word and you get 666 then that's a good sign you shouldn't believe anything they say. That kind of stuff is moronic and those sayings are a dime a dozen - just insert whatever saying you want and then run calculations on the numbers until you get to the 666 or whatever number you want it to be.
Fraud.

At least one of the gates to the Vatican City has that in wrought iron over the gate. The Latin 'vicarious' has a variety of meanings and could legitimately be translated 'standing in for' 'representing' 'in place of' or even 'instead of.'
I think Rome would tell you they mean 'representing'.
The Latin 'Filii' means 'son of', so the phrase means 'Representing the Son of God.'
Remember that in Latin the 'u' is a 'v', so in Latin the phrase is "VICARIVS FILII DEI, and if you add up the latin letters it DOES, oddly, add up to 666!
D=500 There is one D So that's 500
C=100 There's one C, so that's 100
L=50. There is one L So that's 50
V=10 There are 2 V's so that's 10
I=1 There are 6 of them so that's 6
Total = 666.
In both Hebrew and Greek however, "Nero Caesar" adds up to 666. And the Bible of course was originally in Hebrew and Greek, NOT Latin!

The Catholic Church is the original version of Christianity...all others are Catholic Light. Sects formed beginning with very logical differences with Church doctrine when Martin Luther nailed his proclamation to a church door...that was to become the Luthern Church. As time evolved, many more churchs arose, each with their own agenda, each with a preacher who wanted to be supported.
Any attack on the Catholic Church in this manner is akin to blasphemy, for it is filled with lies about a very pious man...no one ascends to the pope without considerably humility and piety. This is an elected official that unites the factions of the Church. The very idea that the pope is in any way related to an anti christ is not only ludicrous, it is a statement of stupidity, and you can bet the ones saying this nonsense have their OWN AGENDA! Beware of men of cloth who have agendae...it is never in your soul's interest, but theirs! Count on it.
I am NOT a Catholic, nor will I ever be one...but to suggest that the Pope is any thing other than a very holy, good man is preposterous. If I were you, I would drop whatever church you are in if this is the best they can do....lying is breaking one of the 10 commandments, and whoever stated this nonsense is a sinner and liar...I, for one, will not be mixed up with a liar...your seminar makes you an accomplice to this lie. Think carefully about what road you are heading down, for it is not the road to any kind of salvation you may be seeking.
Please keep in mind the original translations of the scrolls from which the "666" comes from refer to the Roman Empire, Caeser to be speicific, not some anti-Christ...this is a distorted, magnified error perpetuated by some churches for their own gain...and they know the literal translations, these churches CHOOSE to mislead their flocks...for money, if for no other reason. If you want to really read a bible, get a hold of a true translation...one translated by atheists would have NO agenda involved. Here, you would find exactly as written, not some inferences made to prove a God's word, a God's intent...when Man translates with an agenda, the translation reeks!

Honestly, what a lot of rubbish. I'm sorry, I'm not a catholic (or even a christian), but this type of stuff is too silly for words.
If you want to learn about Catholicism, for the sake of greater understanding, why not go and meet some Catholic people and talk to them about what they believe.
Despite the books and movies which promise vast conspiracies for world domination, you'll find that most Catholics are fairly ordinary people who just happen to think about their faith in a way which is different to the way protestants think.
People who try to tell you different usually have an agenda they are not mentioning ~ trying to divide people and cause a rift between one and another, thereby accruing worldy power.
Sounds an awful lot like what they accuse the catholics of, doesn't it?
Cheers :-)

Since when is numerology an allowable part of christianity? And which numbers would they be adding up? Whether it is in Latin or English, it doesn't make sense to me. I thought the bible strictly forbade this type of practices (numerology, astrology, etc)?
So you attended a christian recruitment group, to try to get you to convert. And they do this by bashing the catholic faith and the representative of god (the pope)?
How can you see this as a christian group. If they want people to join, don't belittle others, build up your own. What has this group done? What does it represent and believe?

Sounds like the kind of thing I would take with a 5 lb bag of salt.
People come up with this stuff all the time. Some may have a basis in truth, most are just convoluted concoctions that can be made to look like eerie, sinister plots.
How bout you doing some research on this?
