to Scott B :"So it's fair to say something smarter than us with a larger capacity for understanding things we can't, is at the center of the orgin of the universe"
by the way in the 1530's Nicholas Copernicus discovered that the earth wasn't at the center of the universe.but that the earth rotated on its axis around the sun in a solar system. When word got out the churches were furious and wanted him killed bec. he opposed the churches. The church/ bible said the earth was at the center of the universe. proving god wrong
if god is so smart what exactly does he teach? He just says to worship him and jesus and all will be good.
another thing.who wrote the bible? bec whoever it was he/she apparently screwed up[typo or somtin] bec. they had to write a new testament.which i believe was written to catch up w/ the 21st century [there was complete nonsense in it so they decided to make it better.. what's up with that anyone heard of rewritting the quran & three pitakay (buddhist holybook)

Science cannot "prove" there is no God.
The existence of God can neither be proven or disproven.

Science never has proven any such thing. The whole point is that science can't prove or disprove God. There is obviously a hole where our minds can't seem to comprehend the orgin of the universe. Science has NEVER been able to prove how to create matter from nothing. But, according to our linear thinking patterns, matter had to start somewhere. So we know through the very science you think somehow disproves God, that there are things far beyond anyone's comprehension. So it's fair to say something smarter than us with a larger capacity for understanding things we can't, is at the center of the orgin of the universe.

The belief in "God" and religion is rooted in three fears.

As we evolved over a few million years and our brains became larger and more powerful, we became self aware to the point that we knew we were going to die someday. It is very likely other animals do not understand this concept. This was the first fear, a fear of death and of the unknown. A vessel had to be created to ease this fear, that would allow us to "live on forever." This became the soul and the "gods" became the keeper and redeemer of it.

At first religions were, to a degree, mentally healthy in this regard. Rather than spend your whole day worrying about your death, now you knew your soul would be taken care of (even if in reality it is not true). However as religions become interwoven with politics, as they have been for centuries, they became the very identity of people, especially the monotheistic varieties. Now, as soon as children are old enough to understand, they are terrorized with a horrible concept of HELL, where they are promised they will assuredly go if they do not believe what they are told (the "faith"). Herein lies the second fear, and a more malicious scheme I cannot imagine.

Going back to our evolution again, we became the most powerful animals on earth, capable of both great and terrible things. With great power, comes great responsibility. When terrible things happened to us or we did terrible things (like exterminate the tribe next to us that did not believe in the same religion) we cast the responsibility to God. It was "God's will." This is exactly how the suicide bomber thinks. And even moderate religious people think that way. I've heard many a religious family member or friend say when they have a downturn (even if it is their own fault) "well God put this challenge in my path for a reason..." This was the third fear, the fear of power and the associated responsibility.

So "belief" is simply those three fears at work, fear of death, the fear of hell which we are told about when we are little children, and fear to truly take responsibility for our actions and lives.

People argue that "faith" trumps science. But the things they have faith in are clearly arbitrary and even ridiculous. One could believe that the "purple god" will one day turn us all purple, and why would that not be true or worthy of faith, when it is has as much proof. A god did not write the bible or other holy books. The pens were in the hands of men and therefore those who believe in the holy books have their faith not in god, but in the men who claim the god told them what to write, and in the men who haggled over the editing of the books, ripping out whole chapters and modifying others throughout history (apparently the god told them to do that also). I won't even mention all the contradictory tales and diabolical horrors "in the name of God" outlined in the holy books, that is a whole other thread.

The only faith that is real, is faith in yourself, nature, science, and the important people and connections in your life. If you have that, then blessed you are. Something might happen to us when we die, but we won't know until then. And until then, honor life, not death.

There is no good reason to believe in the supernatural with no evidence that it exists.

The universe seems to run on unintelligent processes. If a god was needed to create a universe, what created a god?

If god didn't need to be created and always existed, why not jump the gun and say the universe didn't need to be created, and always was? It cuts out another step in logic, and there is still no evidence for gods.

Why not believe in a deity?
Indeed science can prove and that's fine with me.
I'm pagan and understand that old adage; "today's magic is tomorrow's science."
