I looked though this list in wiki and only about 20% of all the gods are godesses. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_gods

And has there ever been a female prophet? I just don't get it!
Are there no female prophets because the gods are sexist and choose males as prophets?

EDIT:

It depends on whether it is a patriarch society or a matriarch society. The man is recognized as being stronger in most societies (Islam, Judaism and Christianity).

In some cultures, the woman is considered stronger, in those you'll find many female god[esse]s.

In cultures where the woman is equal with a man, there's usually a balance in the deities (Wicca).

You also named several Hindu, Greek and Egyptian male gods, while failing to recognize the female ones (Aphrodite, Isis, Lakshmi).

Again, as far as prophets go, the three major montheist religions are all patriarch societies.

There are many female Dieties: Isis, Astate, Hecatat, Demeter, Kali, Nephthys, Nut, Ma'at .... I could keep going but that would take all night and I have to put my son to bed. The point is yes there are a lot of male deities that are known to us but also a lot of female deities, you just have to be willing to look the Divine.
There have been many femae prophets in anceint times and in modern times. They are just not spoken about as much because most of the world is male dominated and in modern times if a male or female were to come out and say they are a prophet they would be commited (unless they were mormon than they might not be)

There are just as many Goddesses in Classical Greek Mythology as there are Gods. The list on wiki is VERY incomplete.

There are also as many Goddesses as Gods in the Norse and Egyptian pantheons. Just ask one of the Asatrur on here and I'm sure they will agree with me.

And as for female prophets, Apollo had a famous STRING of them. They were the Oracular Priestesses at Delphi......

In some ancient cultures, the gods were either female or neuter. But you are correct, most of the gods that have survived to be known by us were male.

There have been many female prophets, just most weren't recognized by a misogynistic society.

I am a women and have pondered this as well, I have come to the conclusion that , It has been the nature of even dominant women to use men to protect them when they are the most vulnerable , "during pregnancy" and to provide for their children . Because of this it has given men a false feeling of superiority over women. Also most women in the past could not walk off like Buddha to find their spiritualism Women tend to take their bond to the family and their children stronger then men do. So threw out history women were to busy with children to seek a commitment to "political" spirituality.
Men also do not understand the strong link that child birth has to spirituality for women. So I think IN the PAST women have not mind men's pursuit of spiritual leadership, BUT THE TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGING.
The Greek and Egyptians has goddesses and they were worshipped because of their ability to bring life from their womb .

There were about the same amount
egyptian: hathor, isis, bes, nut
Greek: athena, hera, aphrodite
Roman: Venus, diana, minerva
Norse: Hel, Freya, Skadi
Celtic: Brigit, morrigan, danu

Thats just to name a few
Then came the One god religion. The goddess gone and a male world begins. There were no prophets known because men wouldn't listen to women. They were no longer there equals.

Most of Apollo's prophets were women. You are correct about the percentage of male deities versus women. You need to remember at this time the men ruled everything, government, religion, land, society. Worshiping goddesses for anything other than "women's issues" did not make sense to them. The goddesses were usually goddesses of nature, motherhood, fertility, crafts, weaving, etc.

I'd attribute it to the fact that most societies are ruled by the descendents of pastoral people. While most long term agricultural people tend to a Goddess with a corn god son/lover, pastorl people seem to tend towards a stricter patriarchy with the inevitable male God.

It's a lot more even than 20/80. Wiki isn't the best resource.
