I'm going to try to cut to the chase; let's be honest--no one REALLY wants to read a wall-o-text to try to figure out what the heck a person is trying to say.

Basically it's this: I have a degree in communications. It's now time that I go out and find a job. One of the jobs I am considering requests skills in accounting. I've never taken a class, though my mother was an accountant while I was in junior high and I often assisted her. In addition I am intending on taking accounting classes through a local juco in the spring.

This is part-time position working for a small, 100 member church.

Knowing this, should I send my resume or shrug it off and keep looking for something else?

The possible part time job is to keep books for a small church
with about 100 members. I think your duty's may be to keep record of donations, expenses, paying bills. As long as they do not require you to work on trial balance, preparing financial statements - P/L, Balance Sheet, I think you can give a try. For basic level of booking, accounting, if you can ask your mother for a quick review on certain topics, you should be able to handle. Of course, you should go to the near by
junior college to take an Accounting 101, 102 at least.
Are you able to work on calculator? This is another required skills. Can you type fast? Answering phone? and dealing with people? Do filing invoices work? You can go to a library and borrow a basic bookkeeping book that will help you fast.
If you apply that job, then, try to do some home work first.

It never hurts to send in your resume. Just list all that information on your resume and turn it in. The worst they can say is no, and that is when you can keep looking for something else. Sounds to me like you would be qualified, but they may be very specific about what they want.

If possible, try to talk to someone in person. That way, you can explain your experience and your intent to take the accounting classes better than a one-page resume ever could.

You really need to talk to the employer and ask them what specifics are required in terms of accounting. If it's some simple items, you may be easily qualified due to your prior experience.

However, accounting is VERY different from communications. If they need you to have general accounting knowledge (instead of some transactional items), you are not qualified. The best bet is to apply and/or call and ask them.

Obviously you are qualified for the job. The question is do you really want it? Just because you don't have any formal education in accounting that doesn't mean that you don't have any experience. Based on your description you have plenty of experience. Don't let you be the one to say no if you really want the job. Apply for it. If the employer doesn't like your experience, they won't hire you, but at least you tried.
