How did Nikki Grant's mother get so powerful? She's like fourth wife, yet she's Roman's right hand man. Also her son, Alby, is the heir to the Grant throne.

Nikki's Mom has an important job, you always see her with Roman and she's always in charge of events at the compound.

I thought all the glory went to the first wife?

I think it's a complete tragedy that HBO is normalizing and downplaying this type of lifestyle. The truth is that polygamist societies are abusive and manipulative, and sexual incest and abuse by husbands, brothers, fathers and uncles run rampant. If you really want a story about polygamy, you should read "Under the Banner of Heaven." It's a deeply shocking and disturbing account of the FLDS.

She explains on the show. I think she was 6th wife, but said she might as well have been 1st, because none of the wives before her would stand up to her, so she just took control (she said she walked over the backs of 5 timid souls to get to where she was today). Presumably that's how her son got to be 'the' son (bet she regrets that part now.ha). She said all that on the last episode when she was telling Barb to show a little backbone and stop worrying about what other people thought. Right after that Barb went to the neighbor (the one that wanted Marge to have her baby) and told her Bill was married to all 3 of them.

ok, , as a former polygamist wife, some of what Sarah had said was true, except for the brothers/ incestuous crap. Ok, here is the deal: in polygamy, MOST of the descision-making is done by the first wife, but ALL help and make descisions. Think of the first wife as a manager of a store, with the owner being the hubby. I have known a polygamist to have as many as 6 wives. I was only one of 3, and I was the youngest at 18. It was my ex hubby's bishop, and I had my own place to live and my own descision, but I was also a wife-sister.

If I remember correctly, she was the one that pushed Roman to make the power grab that put him in charge of the UEB years before.

To the person that was complaining about the show - I think "Big Love" is a great show and is very balanced. It shows the ridiculous patriarchal arrangement that exists in the compound life and other polygamist arrangements; however it also shows that people can love each other and care about each other in ways outside the norms we are used to in our pre-programmed nuclear family society.

I love it!

Am I racist by way of fact my husband is white, or homophobic by way of fact he's a guy? All his different halves being women purely makes him straight away. is this how undesirable our society is getting that straight away individuals are suggested as homophobic purely by way of fact we are straight away?
