atoms and the science behind them don't just appear out of nowhere...the unexplained has an intential force behind it from a superior being

A computer is created and most don't know how it works, but have the knowledge it is a form of science behind which a being with free will created...does the same not apply to the creation of science and the universe??? I.E. God

there are lots of brilliant answers here...atheists are smart people - however, here are some facts

many people in fact do go unpunished
every creation has a creator, that's why the unknown continues to go unexplained

We don't think that we serve no purpose. We just don't think that we were purposefully created. You make your own purpose. I know plenty of people whose lives have no purpose, but that's because THEY make it so.

As for your question about people being "punished", well, there's several things to be said on that issue. First, the majority of people are punished in some way, shape, or form. First, there's prison. Second, people who live bad lives tend to be very unhappy people, due to living bad lives. Third, yes, there are some bad people that are happy and go through life without punishment, and then die. Sure, it's NICE to think that they're going to get their comeuppance in some other life, but there's no reason whatsoever to believe that it's anything but wishful thinking only. No one said that life is fair.

I'm an atheist and I do not believe life has no purpose. Those who do believe that are nihilists. I am not a nihilist.
You see, we can actually go through and trace who made a computer. We can call Dell, read them our serial number and have them trace where it was made, when it was made, and I'm sure if we really wanted to we could track down what specific workers were working the day my computer was made.
Now, I do not know too much about physics, so I am not sure what science says where atoms originated from, however just because science has not unraveled this question yet it does not mean we need to make up some crackpot theory on how some god made these atoms. It is just like the ancient peoples all over the world who believed lightening was caused by angry gods. Now we know it is just electricity in the air.

I believe its very likely Jesus did exist and was a historical MORTAL figure. A man, and only a man. I believe the purpose of his life was to inspire people who lived in a time when life was pretty crappy and give them hope where there was nothing to work with. We people living in modern times have it pretty easy. Life practically is a paradise compared to back then. No refrigeration, disease, lack of plumbing, critical poverty. Imagine if you're life was crap, and it wasn't going to get any better. Wouldn't the idea of a "paradise", an "Eternal" life, and some "Big plan" that you're part of, sound like a pretty good deal? Surely it would make all the suffering of their current situation a bit more bearable. I'm not the least bit suprised he gained so many followers. A lot of bad stuff was happening back then, and people wanted hope.

You're right. Atoms don't appear out of nowhere. Neither do invisible all-powerful people.

And science wasn't created, it was there to be discovered. It is a study of the world.

A computer being created is much different than a universe, considering we have concrete evidence of who invented the computer, so your analogy doesn't apply.

People do get punished. They have to deal with the federal system, don't they? And, life does serve a purpose, but that purpose is here on earth, not in some La-la land. Our purpose is to perpetuate the existence of humans, to become more advanced, to move FORWARD. I.E, away from an old, dusty book.

"Why would people go unpunished and life serve no purpose?"

Exactly how do these go together? Your god exists only to punish?

How pathetic that your life has no meaning except as the object of your sky faerie's sadistic whims.

ADDENDUM

"nothing can create itself"

Who created God?

"whatever created something else can keep going on and on into the past, but has to have an intential force behind it...it would be impossible not to"

Rather destroys the idea of an eternal god. Doesn't it? Congratulations on seeing the light.

The only purpose life has is what we are taught to give it, a
child come's into the world and know's not the difference
between a god and an irs agent, it know's not anything but
what it need's by signals in it's body and hence it responds
by crying. It crie's not because it doesn't feel the presnce of
a sumpreme being, as far as it's concerned the breast that
feed's it is the supreme being if you will . . .

As an infant i knew nothing of this guy called god, slowly i
grew and over the years suddenly these teachings are in
my face and ears and mind and supposedly in my heart . . .

I once was catholic now i'm atheist, if my life has any purpose
at all it's because i either give it some purpose or i don't . . .

In any case were i suddenly thrusted back into infancy i hardly think i would be crying for my wife or my kids to be here or that i would miss them, but if got hungry i would sure as hell need what goes into my mouth so in essence if by some chance there was a supreme being, i would hope he, was a she . . .

1. Just because there are unknown factors does not automatically that those unknown factors are God (at least not as we know it)
2. The world is not a computer. It is the fallacy of the modern age to make comparisons between the natural and technological
3. Life may serve a purpose. We just don't know it :)
4. People who go unpunished have guilt, fear, paranoia, and regret to haunt them. The conscience is our justice.

I think most atheists believe life serves a purpose, and it is a purpose that the individual must find for his/ herself. And people go unpunished, huh? I guess you haven't heard about the rapidly growing prison population. We even punish people who didn't do anything wrong.

Why do you believe that we believe life serves no purpose.

I beg to differ, as an atheist.

The meaning of life is to live each day as if it were your last. It's also about leaving the world in better shape than when you found it.

I also don't need the threat of punishment to be a decent, loving human being.

When have atheists ever said that life serves no purpose? If that were true no atheist would answer your question cuz they'd all have commited suicide LOL. But anyways, your logic is flawed. The universe is not proof of God anymore than teeth are proof of the toothfairy....The Bible is full of contradicitions and ethical problems-look it up.
